Insuring Antique Jewelry
by: Ashely

Sharon my heart goes out to you - what a shock you must have had when you discovered too late, the limit on insured valuables was only $2500! I am a collector myself, and you have sounded an alarm bell for me.
I do know its important to keep a list and photographic record but not on your software in case the computer is stolen. Sharon is there any advice you might have in regards to insurance. What will you do differently in the future? Again Im so sorry to hear this. I hope you build an even better collection!

Get an appraisal!
by: Sharon

If this really is a ruby, it's very valuable, in the thousands. Run, don't walk to the best jeweler in town, say you just inherited it, and you need them to tell you whether it's a ruby and if it is you will pay for an appraisal ($100-150). They should be able to give you a fairly quick, free opinion whether it is a ruby, garnet or doublet etc. If it is a ruby, pay for the appraisal, then make a copy and send it to your insurance agent.

I learned the hard way when I lost all my antique jewelry in a burglary, that insurance companies have limits on valuable items. You probably have a $2500 or so limit. Anything valuable must be on a list with some kind of proof of value in order to be reimbursed.

It's not fun to pay for an appraisal, but it's also not fun to find out after the fact how many thousands have been lost by fire or theft.

Corrine, No I have never had it tested nor never knew I could. I know nothing about jewels, just know what I like when I see it. I never even new there was a natural ruby or there was a difference. Do I go to jewelers to have it tested? I will have to look into it. Thank you, Lynne

Stunning Ruby Ring
by: Corrine

Lynne, I just had to compliment! My goodness what an amazing stone! I love, the combination of Ruby and Gold. Passion perfection, if you ask me, the heat of rubies climbs higher under the warmth of yellow gold. If you don't mind me asking, have you managed to test the stone to see if it's a natural ruby ? Natural Rubies can be more expensive than Diamonds. Regards Corrine

I have a ring too
by: Anonymous

While I have a ring with that emerald cut stone, mine was given to me on my 16th birthday. That would be 54 years ago and the stone was a very pretty amethyst and not a ruby. The ring style is very similar with an exception that there were small swirls on the side and my ring was stamped 14K.

I would have to guess that if a jeweler can tell you the ring is gold, back then there were a lot of jewelers who hand made rings and they were not hallmarked... since this was a great, great grandma... the ring could date back to the late 1800's or early 1900's. Only a jeweler could tell you if the ruby and the shank are genuine and real gold. Since there are no hallmarks of any kind on the ring... I really think it was handmade by a jeweler back as far as the early 1900's and that is my best guess. It actually has a style similar to what I mentioned so I don't have any information and just a best guess. I'm sorry but I also have an old brooch I put on this site that apparently has a foreign hallmark and is 18K with Persian turquoise. The person who originally bought it is also deceased... If the ring is really a ruby and also gold, a jeweler suggested if I wanted more information, or to sell it... an auction house would be the place to go.
