Edwardian Style and the Passengers on the Titanic by: Anonymous
Hi Stacey thank you for writing in with the following antique jewelry questions:
" I inherited this 14k white gold and diamond brooch. I am unsure of the age or the era/style it may be considered.
The only mark on the item is 14k on the necklace clasp. I had the remainder of the brooch tested and it too is 14k white gold. The diamonds are natural, not lab created. There are 2 larger diamonds, 2 medium and 24 small diamonds.
The back of the piece has a pin and clasp. The pin sits in the clasp and the clasp rotates to secure the pin."
Your antique diamond brooch/pendant is beautiful Stacey! You don't see craftsmanship like this today! I would date this piece to early 20th century. If we had to give it a label, which I don't like doing, it would be classified as Edwardian style.
The bruting machine that was invented in (1891) allowed the girdle of the diamond to be cut in a round shape. Up until this time the girdle was squarish. Antique diamond cuts with the new rounded girdle are referred to as Old European Cut.
The findings that you describe and the pendant loop that we can see, also provide dating clues. In the early 20th century these fittings became popular.
