How early can a 585 mark be?

Hi! I'm attaching an image of a ring that looks early 19th century -- rose cuts set in silver, gold band -- but its mark is 585. How early can it be. When did they start using this mark? Would you assume that it's European?

many thanks! Laura

Many items like this were produced in Holland in the 1970's they all used rose cut type diamonds many with royal blue enamel. You could order them they would be made to order and sent to UK with a certificate of antiquity to reduce import and duty fees.

14K Kt Standard Introduced in Britain and US
by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

in 1854 there was a monumental change to the British hallmarking system, by allowing the carat number plus the Decimal point, ie. 9 with .375, 18 with.750 to be marked on Jewelry.

If the marks are worn down on the metal and faded you will need the assistance of the jewelers loupe. Cup loupes are preferred by jewelry appraisers for hallmark identification.

There is a magnifying glass at one end of the cup loupe. You put the large open end over your eye and then bring the object up to eye until it comes into focus. Information on Jewelry Loupes can be found Here.

12 ct and 15 ct were discontinued in 1932 in Britain when the 14 ct standard was introduced.

Now the state, United States that is: 14k - .585 is also a U.S. Gold Mark,

this is a tricky one, the front of the ring looks georgian style and there is a possibility that the gold band was added at a later date. Our Victorian and Georgian ancestors in general had smaller wrists, hands and fingers, so the fingere ring sizes were smaller; the ring could have been resized at a later date. If the finger ring size now, is on the large side this will help to confirm.
For anyone interested in how to measure ring size click here.

Pair 585 gold wedding rings, German origin - PHOTO

by Ruth
(Wales)

Thanks for your response, this is a follow up to my first post and i have added a photo.

This is the best photo I could get of the heart hallmark, they are as described below:

the letter V in a circle
the number 585 (which I believe to represent 14K gold)
A heart symbol with an arrow going through it and in the centre of the heart I think is an 'N' or a 'Z' on its side

thanks in advance, Ruth

Modern? 585 gold ring.
by: Anonymous

Greetings Ruth - the ring looks quite modern.. and it looks like one ring in the photo. 585 is the gold composition and means there is 585 parts per 1000 parts or 58.5% gold and is popular in Asia for overseas market. Common in USA. and in Russia - 584. Ruth did you purchase the jewelry in Germany recently?

585 Mark on Jewelry

by Jeannette Gutkowski
(cincinnati, OH)

I have a bracelet and bar pin that is stamped 585 and has been in the family for a long time. My grandparents were immigrants from Eastern Europe. The gold in the pieces has a reddish look instead of a pure goldish color. I have been wondering about the history and value of these pieces.

Thank you so much.

585 = Russian
by: Jennifer

you probably have yourself an antique piece. More likely than not, its from Russia, and probably quite valuable.

-Russians preferred reddish gold color jewelry, instead of yellow gold color jewelry....now that doesn't necessarily mean that they didnt use yellow gold- its just that the reddish hue was most popular back then.

585 was a russian gold standard .. 585=14k

in other words the ring is approximately .5833% gold

hope that helps!

Jewelry Valuations

Hi Enna

the mark is a common gold standard. 585 is another way of saying 14 Karat.

The mark 585 is used more over in Europe. 14K is used more in the US. Yes, the bracelet is of value. Apart from the sentimental store of value, there is also the art, the craftsmanship; we can't comment on this as we cannot see it but it sounds very interesting from your description.

There is a link to check TODAYS GOLD PRICE in the Jewelry Resources.

You might like to have the item valued. We provide an independent on-line appraisal service. Each valuation is carried out by experts in their respective fields.

585
by: Anonymous

585 stands indeed for 14 karats gold. 585 means exactly 58.5% gold. the reddish colour is probably due to the other materials which has been used to manufacture the object (often copper for rose/red gold). gold comes in a variety of colours, of which the most known ones are yellow gold, white gold and red gold. The slightly reddish colour would indicate red gold.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colored_gold

price depends largely on the gold price in general, size (weight) of the object, the state it is in, the age of the object, the actual design and if there are other materials used like diamonds and gemstones.

new rings of 14K rose/red gold at this very moment have a retail price of roughly 57 US dollar / gram.

Russian Rose Gold
by: Yvonne

Hi Jeannette! the reddish look of the metal of the jewelry that was handed down from your grandparents that came from Eastern Europe is more than likely because the metal is called - Rose Gold.

Rose gold is a gold and copper alloy widely used for specialized jewelry due to its reddish color. It was popular in Russia at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and is also known as RUSSIAN gold.

It is also known as pink gold and red gold.

Rose Gold is an alloy. There is no such thing as "pure rose gold". A common alloy for rose gold is 75% gold and 25% copper by mass (18 karat).

I have an antique diamond ring that looks as though it might be white gold or platinum. However, the markings on the inside of the band says "14k LIT" I have tried to find out what this is, but the local jewelry appraisal here, specializing in antique jewelry, said he was not familiar with the marking, but that the diamonds were very good ones. He was unable to do an appraisal at that time, but I never took it back. Are you familiar with the marking?

Litwin Diamond Cutters Cincinnati sounds right to me...

I recently inherited some jewelry from a relative and one of the ring boxes came from Zales and had the original receipt in it from 1984. Both rings have "LIT-14k" inscribed on them. I'm not familiar with jewelry but I assume Zales and other chains don't actually cut the stones, they just buy them and give credit to the cutters, in this case Litwin Diamond Cutters Cincinnati.

LIT mystery mark
by: Anonymous

Good Afternoon!
If it were a one-off handcrafted ring I would agree with the appraiser - who is stating the most obvious, in that - LIT being the initials of the jeweler. However as this is the third visitor with a white gold ring, set with good quality diamonds and then LIT - all capital letters, after gold standard mark, I'm not so sure, if it is a studio jeweler using an unregistered mark. It remains a mystery mark at this stage, I'm afraid.

Trying to shed Light on 14 k LIT mark
by: Anonymous

Sometimes you get jewelry with clarifying letters after the metal composition marks, that are confused for a makers mark. For example, EG - electroplated; HGP - Hard Gold Plate;
There doesn't seem to be any info though suggesting LIT is a clarifying metal mark. Also I couldn't find a European maker with these initials, in my reference books. I'm thinking of the possibility of the letters 'LIT' being an identifying mark used at the time of manufacture for a high end store line?

The colors of gold
by: Anonymous

Hi Rachel I'm not sure what you mean exactly. I think you might mean you have a yellow and white gold ring hallmarked 585?

If this is the case, it means 14K, 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold (Asian for overseas market. Common in USA. Russian 584.)

Rarely you may see something different. The odd ones can be easily be calculated using following...
1 karat gold is 1 part in 24 gold.

So for instance 22ct or 22K is 22 parts in 24 of pure gold or 22/24ths or if you multiply 22/24 X 1000 you get 916 (916 parts per 1000) or 91.6% gold.

If you see a number, for example 585, divide it by 1000 and multiply by 24, it will give you the carat. 585 / 1000 x 24 = 14. 04ct.

Gold comes in many colors depending on the other metals used in the alloy. The carat does NOT change because of the color. The amount of gold is the same. White, Rose and other are just variations in colour.

Meaning of 585 gold hallmark
by: Anonymous

585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold 14K, 14ct (Asian for overseas market. Common in USA. Russian 584.)

Gold may be stamped with K or ct or just a 3 digit number like 585. The "ct" is interchangeable with "K" for karat. The term KARAT refers to the fineness of gold. The word CARAT usually refers to a weight, generally for gemstones but is also used for gold.

Find info on healing gemstones Here.

The number refers to the fineness of gold in parts per 1000. All these marks are acceptable.

There are many carats used in jewellery.

Hi Blue Stone German Ring owner

you can have jewelry valued on-line but you need to know what the blue stone is first in order to inform the appraiser. If you take the ring to your local jeweler, he should have a good idea what the stone is or at least recommend where you can get the stone tested - jewelers are not necessarily gem experts.

Gold Ring with Blue Stone found in Germany

Hi thank you for sending in the following question:

"I own a gold ring with a large blue stone with the 585 stamp on the inside. It was found by my grandfather in a castle in germany during world war 2. How can I find out its worth, if it is antique, and the origin of the ring"

How fascinating! Are there any other marks on this ring? The three digits 585 designate the gold content.

585 is 14K, 14ct (585 parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold.

There are many different stones that are blue, for example, blue sapphires, aquamarines, blue topaz. Aquamarines are usually a paler shade of blue. Details concerning the style of the ring would provide dating clues.

We would all love to see this ring. You can upload a photo in a follow-up submission if you are able. There is a button that says "upload" underneath where you type in the question on Antique Jewelry Investor.

Asch Grossbardt Contacts
by: Anonymous

Hi Diane

Asch Grossbardt makes beautiful jewelry based on the ancient jewelry-making tradition of mosaics, which was developed and perfected by Florentine craftsmen during the Renaissance, that looks like stained glass windows of a gothic cathedral.

Unlike enamel, which is applied on top of the metal, inlaid jewelry involves hand-cutting and hand-setting small pieces of semi-precious stones to create an intricate, predetermined mosaic pattern.

You could contact the company and ask if one of their designers signed the work with the initials on your piece.

Hallmarks on 14 KT - 7 Piece Vanity Set

by Margie
(United States)

I have a 7 piece set of vanity items- 1 large crystal &
gold lidded jar, 2 small crystal & gold lidded jars, a brush, mirror, file, &
shoehorn. I purchased them from our small town's museum about 10-15 years ago.

They each have a hallmark stamped into the gold parts, next to the hallmark it has 14kt. I'm assuming the 4 digit number after that are the item's order/ replacement part number. (since only the two small jars have the same number) then a tiny x. The museum could not give me any information other than it was owned by Mrs. H. H. Hamilton, St. Paul (which is clearly engraved on the underside & side of several pieces).

I've been able to find several listings for silver vanity sets but none for gold vanity sets. I'd like to know what year they were made & by what company, it would be great to know how much to start the sale price at too. Thanks.

I don't think it means 16grams. I have a gold diamond ring with 375on one side and GM 16 on the other. It's a ring so not 16g Wish was 16g at what gold costs. And have another ring with both 375 and 585 so I too would love to know the answer to your question

Compulsory Marks on Gold

These marks are compulsory marks that tell you the gold content.
585= 14 karat gold
750= 18 karat gold
375= 9 karat gold

16 gm = maybe the weight

Tie bar
by: Gerry Rimmer

I was bought a present for my retirement
It is rose gold with two letters K N then 585 followed by a crest
Of some sort , next is a bottle type inside letters A M and some type of squiggle after the next mark is of a Kokoshnik facing right with 585 ,behind the ladies head at the bottom is the letter M . Someone has obviously taken a lot of trouble to do this work because in the headress of the lady wearing the Kokoshnik are tiny little jewel like spots that can only be seen in sunlight with a jewellers loupe .
Can you help please

Hi

R marking inside the ring might be the manufacturer or if the ring isn't solid gold it might be Rolled gold. (Gold Plate).

Pair 14K gold wedding rings, German origin

Hi guys,

I have wedding ring set that belonged to some family parents. The rings are 14K gold and are believed to be from German Art Deco period. the marks on both rings are as follows:

the letter V in a circle
the number 585 (which I believe to represent 14K gold)
A heart symbol with an arrow going through it and in the centre of the heart I think is an 'N' or a 'Z' on its side

I would like to know anything you can tell me about these rings please, sorry but the hallmark is too small for my camera macro.

Good luck hallmark guru!

German Marks V in circle
by: Anonymous

D. Vollgold & Sohne , Berlin founded ca.1850 used a V in circle trademark. The letter V without a circle was also used by D. Vollgold & Sohne BEFORE 1886.

I have only ever seen this mark on 800 + silver followed by the country mark of Germany - (reichsmark) of a crescent moon & crown (Halbmond Und Krone). These two marks (latter) became compulsory by 1888.

I'm not familiar with the heart mark you describe, a photo will help. If Possible, please upload a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission.

Thanks for writing in...

14k "K"

by Ginny
(New Port Richey, Fl USA)

I have a 14k gold, enamel, and pearl grapes brooch. It is hallmarked with just the letter "K" I thought it might be Krementz but everything I have read Krements used an unusual hallmark, not the letter "K" and also their name. It looks similar to a lot of their pieces but I was wondering if anyone knew this hallmark.
Thanks!! Oh and there is also a "K" above the 14 so I don't think it is the "K" for the 14k

"Krementz" mostly on GOLD PLATE Costume Jewelry
by: Anonymous

Hi mama - glad to see someone's paying attention. there are several variations of the Kremetz costume jewelry mark. The full name "Krementz' was mainly used on Costume Jewelry - ca 1884- 1997.

14 K and the K is in fancy script like Ginny's mark, was used by Frank Krementz on GOLD Jewelry & Lorgnettes, in NJ, USA.

FYI Lorgnettes are a pair of spectacles with a handle, rather than fitting over the ears.

Warm Wishes,
Yvonne

More Information Requested.
by: Anonymous

Hi Robin thanks for your question. These marks that include numbers can be puzzling can't they, as there are a few possibilities. It could simply be a purity mark, a maker's mark that included the "14" as the trademark, or the purity mark plus the initials of the maker IK. More information is therefore requested in relation to the following:

1. When and how was the ring acquired, for example: purchased at a Flea Market or Auction 6 years ago  OR  picked it up at a Garage Sale from a French family 2 years ago etc

2. A PHOTO (you are welcome to upload a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission).

3. Any other information you may have already discovered and any other details that will help.

What is the C inside a circle?
by: Anonymous

I have earrings with the 585 stamp and the C in a circle. Can you tell me what the C inside a circle stands for.
thank You

Hi there, thank you for writing in...

C in a circle could simply be the stamp for "copyright" or it could be the sponsor's mark. We need to see an image of the mark.

The number "585" is the gold purity mark. 585 is the millesimal value and simply means "585" parts per 1000 - your earrings are comprised of 14K gold. This standard mark is commonly seen on Asian jewelry for the overseas market. It is also common in the USA. Russia are close, they have a "584" designation.

Maltase Hallmarks on Gold
by: Anonymous

Good Afternoon Ryan

Ryan, I've heard of pawn brokers who strike purity marks on metal possidetis uti, so nothing would surprise me, however, if the gold (presuming the metal is gold) was assayed by the Malta assay office after 2004, then it will have the Malta assay office mark.

If there is no malta assay mark, the mark could have been stamped by the jewelry manufacturer prior 2004. I think "AU" would indicate the chemical element for Gold with the atomic number 79 and not the maker's mark.

14 k is the gold content. Ryan, when you ask "is the necklace chain "real or fake" ? I' m assuming you mean, is the gold content 14 karat gold or 14 karat gold plated? The simple answer - get the metal tested.

Best Wishes,
Yvonne

BK mark on ring band

Hi Andrea I love rose gold jewelry, your band sounds lovely..

I have a rose gold bracelet marked B 14

I was told it was the mark for Kent & Woodland - New York 1896 - 1824. I was thinking that maybe the K might be for the gold content.

Another idea would be to get the gold tested to make sure it is 14 k solid gold, i believe some gold plated pieces of jewelry have some unusual marks.

I hope this might help in your search.

Hi Jo thank you for writing in with the following question:

"I've just purchased a ring from america and want to find out more about it. It's a blue topaz stone with small diamonds surrounding it in an art deco style. Can anyone give me an insight to it's origin date etc from it's marks:

Jo if the ring was described to you as "art deco style" it means it is not an antique ring but reproduced in the antique style.

The jewelry mark, "14 k" denotes the gold composition. 14K is common in the US. It means it is 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold. As I can't tell you anything about the maker's mark without a photo, I'll fill you in on the topaz gemstone.

Usually topaz is yellow, ranging from canary-yellow to orange-yellow sometimes colorless or of a wide range of other colors including PALE BLUE, pale green, pink, golden brown, and sherry-brown. It is very hard on the Mohs Scale.

There is NO commercial synthetic topaz, which is good news, but the term is sometimes applied to Synthetic Corundum.

The name TOPAZ has for centuries been applied to a stone which was found on the Arabian Gulf island of TOPAZOS!

MO Mark
by: Anonymous

Hi

I am aware that letters MO is the mark of a registered British maker by the name of:

Joseph Fenton & Sons (Sheffield, UK) 1797 - 1940

however if your ring is also stamped 14k I doubt it this Trademark
perhaps it is a US mark that's not been registered?

Have you had the Diamonds tested? If they are Moissanite there is the possibility. Originally this material referred to a rare mineral discovered by Henri Moissan and has now been synthesised in laboratories.

after reading other people's comments, it seems like 14K is for 14 karats or carets. and SR is the signature of the maker/designer/cutter. whatever.

is this right?

Trying to find out about my ring
by: Anonymous

In the inside of my ring it says (14k LSC on the right side and on the left side it says PAT. PENDING .44) It is white gold I was told it was in total 1.00 carats. It is a princess cut on top. There are several emerald cut on the top sides. there are three round cut diamonds on either sides and there are two round cut diamonds going under the princess. The 8 round cut diamonds looks like it is a river of diamonds under the princess cut. I don't know anything about the ring

14K KEEPSAKE hallmark/makers mark
by: Jeweler's Granddaughter

Regarding the comment addressing "14K Keepsake" ~ A keepsake, used generically, is a souvenier or remembrance of an event, occassion or individual. It could be anything from a piece of jewelry to a hair ribbon. Anything you "keep" to remind you of something special is a "keepsake."
BUT an item of 14K jewelry, especially an engagement or wedding ring or a wedding set, hallmarked "Keepsake" inside the band or bands, signifies a piece made by the Keepsake jewelry company. The original company Keepsake was originally founded in 1930 by the A.H. Pond family in Syracuse, N.Y., and became well known for its fine diamond engagement rings, especially during and after WWII. It was acquired in the 1970s by ArtCarved, now part of Commemorative Brands.

Walmart is an authorized retailer of the current Keepsake items, made by another company, Fredrick Goldman, which has a similar lengthy history of producing quality jewelry. But the current Keepsake items are not the same designs, or have the high quality diamonds of the original vintage pieces.

Leo Diamonds - Heads Up
by: Anonymous

Anon - you mean the ring is marked LSC 14 don't you - not the actual diamond? FYI KAY'S are not the only authorised retailer of Leo Diamonds. Ernest Jones does it too and apparently so does Leslie Davies. Leo Diamonds can be likened to Versace and Gucci in the fashion world. It's a fashionable brand name diamond! But you pay for the brand name - Leo diamonds are quiet pricey.

Beautiful Diamond Ring for April 2012
by: Anonymous

The diamonds in this engagement ring look stunning even in the photo! Either it's a great bargain or the diamonds are synthetics.
Let's assume it was an urgent sale, and the diamonds are natural. When it comes to appraising the diamonds - ( birthstone for April) clarity and grade are so important. This information can only be obtained by examining the stones in person by a trained specialist. I would advise you to have a professional appraisal carried out in-store.

I just bought my fiancé a ring at a very cheap price. $300. It is solid white gold except for an accent band between tier 1 and 2. It is marquis cut with 2 smaller diamonds equaling 1/4 carat and 8 smaller diamonds on the sides equalling 1/2 carat. The marquis stone is almost 1 carat. The ring is stamped or engraved (14 kt LSC2 7). I really want to find out more. Please help.

14 kt Keepsake
by: Anonymous

"lsc" would be the maker's mark or artist's marks and signatures. When somebody signs a piece of jewelry, they're also putting their name and reputation to it. So in general, a signature is one sign of a quality piece. That's not to say you won't run into cheapies and knockoffs! For instance, Tiffany jewelry is highly susceptible to counterfeiting.

14 kt is the gold purity mark. It might be stamped 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold. 14k is common in USA.

A 14kt gold KEEPSAKE is souvenir; a small item/jewelry that reminds a person of a specific event or time, is comprised of 14 carat gold.

H.O. 585

I understand that 585 means 14K but could you tell me what the O.H. means? I have a man's wedding band that a relative that died over 45 years ago, told my family, he found on a battlefield during WW2,

It's been passed around the family along with a Prussian medics metal for years, and since it looks as if the ring has been "cut" my family has always wondered if they weren't just "found" but "taken off" from someone.

No ones ever known quite what to do with them, but I would at least like to know what the marks are. It's O.H. 585 with the initials G J G. Thank You Carole

14K Golden Bracelet | Possibly The Netherlands

After my mother died, over 30 years ago, she left me a golden 14k bracelet. I don't know where it was bought, because she lived in Australia and later in The Netherlands. I made a picture of the hallmark but could not find it anywhere, so maybe there is someone in here who recognize this, and can tell me a bit about how old it is, where it's from etc. TIA.

Estate Diamond Engagement Ring
by: Anonymous

You can tell a lot about the gemstones. The baguette cut isn't an antique diamond but was invented in the early 20th century around the 1920s-30. It continues to be a popular diamond cut shape today, often used to highlight the sides of an engagement ring, just like your ring here. The baguette diamonds in your ring are quite long and they look slightly tapered which gives the ring a very elegant appearance.

I have a Colombian Emerald Ring with a small Baguette Diamond on each side of the square cut emerald, that I bought new in 2007. The colour of this emerald is just magic! The band is 18 carat yellow gold, and the combination, with the cut of stones, the combination of stones in a yellow gold setting, is what attracted me. Because the not so high quality of the baguette accent diamonds in this ring, the emerald is the main player, I have toyed with the idea of replacing the diamond baguette with the ruby baguette one of these days.

The date will depend conclusively on the success of the determination of the marks, but even if you do find that the maker's mark falls within the art deco period you would not really describe this ring as "Art Deco" as it characterising feature?

An estate diamond ring would be more appropriate a description, I feel. Good luck! I like it!

Hi Pam - sorry for the delay - due to the volume of questions we now receive we concentrate on antique jewelry hallmarks.

Get the stone tested. If it's alexandrite and not synthetic alexandrite and good color, you won't have to worry too much about the hallmark :-)

Here is a link to another possible Alexandrite ring, the stone weighs approx. 40 cts!

Described as 14K but not Hallmarked 14K

I purchased a baguette diamond ring on eBay which was described as 14K gold. I do not find a hall mark inside the band. It is a very pretty ring, full of sparkle, but I am bothered by the missing hall mark. I have been in contact with the seller and she says she purchased it from Montgomery Ward's years ago as an upgrade (turn in an old ring, they allow the purchase price on a better ring).

She has yet to explain to me why there is no hall mark. Should I return the ring?

missing gold stamp
by: Jean Papin

Gold purity marks have been required on gold jewelry in the US since 1906, so you are right to be suspicious of an unmarked item which sounds like it is a 20th century piece. There is a possibility that the stamp was sized out or polished off. You should hold off on leaving feedback for the ebayer until you get the ring tested by a jeweler.

Thank you so much for your reply. I am sending the ring back without having it tested by my jeweler. I did some research on Montgomery Ward jewelry and they sold a great deal of vermeil settings. I suspect that she doesn't even know it is vermeil. She is accepting the ring back so there is no problem with that. You are right though, I do like the ring, but it is of no use to me. Thank you again. This is a wonderful site.

Test the Metal
by: Anonymous

It's clear you do like this ring, DESCRIBED as 14K Diamond but not verified or you would have returned it already.

Some of the world's greatest optimists are eBay sellers, although there are some very reputable traders, so I 'm told.

With the price of gold at historic high levels, some people are turning to gold in the form of physical gold jewelry as a form of investment. It is critical when you buy jewelry, that you are certain of the metal content (at least).

Although the ring may be pretty, you have every right to know the ring you purchased as 14K, is in fact 14K gold as described.

Where she purchased the ring and the upgrade story may well be true but this is not evidence of the metal composition. You purchased a ring in good faith believing it to be 14K gold as described. If you have a gold tester you could test the metal yourself. No gold tester? No 14K gold mark? This is what I would do.

Email the seller directly and inform her that because the ring is not hallmarked you will be having the ring tested to verify it is 14K gold, by your local jeweler. If it turns out that the ring is not 14 K gold as described you will be returning the ring immediately and would like the amount you paid for the ring, refunded plus the cost of the testing carried out by your jeweler. (You will send the receipt from jeweler)

If the ring is 14K gold you will have something in writing as confirmation plus the added peace of mind. There is nothing worse, than having a piece of jewelry and not knowing some aspect about it, especially the metal composition. I think I'd also get the jeweler to test the diamond.

Apple Green Jade and gold hallmarks
by: Anonymous

Hi thank you for writing in, however we need to see a photo of the mark. Could you please upload a photo in a follow-up submission. Good quality green jadeite is quite valuable.

If you cannot upload a photo, use a magnifying glass, preferably with 10 x magnification or a jewelers loupe and examine the letters again. See if you can determine what the last letter is. Look at details like the style of the font and if there is a cartouche behind the letters. Then look at the shape of the cartouche. These details are all-important when identifying hallmarks.

Then you might like to examine the jade and determine if it is nephrite jade or jadeite ;-)

Need history on men's 14K gold snake ring with ruby eyes

by Nancy
(FL, USA)

I have a vintage 14K gold men's coil snake ring with ruby eyes. It has imprinted "GERMANY" as well as an oval with "H&A" inside and 3 curved lines on each exterior side of the oval placed at 2:00 and 8:00 points (as if the oval was a clock). I have not been able to find any ring like this anywhere. It was gifted to my husband in the mid-1960s. It wraps around the finger 3 times, with the head first, then mid-section second, and the tail third. It is flexible and the eyes are set with roughly uneven faceted rubies, as if hand cut. I would love to know anything about this ring and possible value. I am including two pictures, one the overall view of the ring, and the other is the back side of the head with all of the markings as described above.

I worked for Paramount Wedding Ring Co. in the 70s-80s which was located at 910 W Jackson in Chicago that had a P inside the Pear for their trademark. The company was privately owned by the Sager family and had been around for quite some time, the great grandfather started it in the 20s or 30's if I remember correctly. They sold to all the top stores in US and also Government PX's world wide for armed forces. When gold went through the roof they had to sell to some company out of Ca.

My Pear ring

I inherited from my grandmother a diamond engagement ring with the same Pear "P" hallmark just as the first person described. Sure does look like a pear and not a plumb. I have tried to find the history of this ring and the pear hallmark, but have not had any luck.

Pear shaped p
by: Anonymous

I found a ring this morning and am waiting to turn it into the office nearby, but am wondering what the pear shape with a P inside means...it too is followed by 14k...I found it in the parking lot of Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul. I'm assuming someone wanted to leave it on the grave of a loved one so I will turn it in asap but am curious in the meantime when it dates from.

P in a Pear Hallmark
by: Anonymous

My wedding band has what looks like a P inside a pear shaped hallmark followed by 14K. The ring was my grandfathers and most certainly predates the 1978 "plumb" movement. I believe it dates from the late 1930's.

P in a Pear Mark on 14 K
by: Anonymous

I can see an A in an Apple but cannot find a P in a Pear so far. Are you sure it's a P in a pear and not a P in a plumb? I'm serious Dust.

In the United States karat can LEGALLY vary one half of a carat. In 1978 the karat mark followed by a P was introduced to make sure the piece was "plumb" gold. In other words, it is guaranteed by the manufacturer to be no less than 14k.

If there are any "fruity" hallmark experts reading this post who have another idea please feel free to contribute.

Thanks for writing in..

Could mean no less than 14k
by: Anonymous

Hi

the P following the karat mark was introduced in 1978. If it's marked "P" for plumb gold, following the 14kt mark, it is guaranteed by the manufacturer to be no less than 14k.

Good luck with the other marks; you might like to get it appraised by the experts. I had an antique cameo bracelet appraised recently and was very pleasantly surprised! It also came with information about the piece, that I was delighted to find out about and also provided the antique jewelry value.

Harvey Feder and Irv Baumstein had extraordinary taste in the unique jewelry that they made. Many jewelers copied one another, but I never saw them. The closing of their company exemplifies the collapse of much fine jewelry manufacturing in NYC. A.Jaffe and the Goldman brothers remain and prosper but the dozens of others that I dealt with are gone. They were indeed, the greatest generation.

Lion ring
by: Anonymous

Krementz and company, originally in Newark, NJ, had a fine jewelry division (ONE OF SEVERAL DIVISIONS) which made particularly fine, traditional lion rings which predate Baumf's. But, these were not the endlessly copied ring made in three head sizes by Baumstein and Feder. Baumf. had their lion head ring first made in the 1950s (if I am not mistaken with the date). The original models were commisioned to a designer/model maker in Italy and then cast and finished in N.Y.C. under their manufacturing auspices.

Baumf trademark

Harvey Feder and Irv Baumstein made very fine jewelry from the 1940s and through the late 1980s in New York City. They made the original lion's head ring which was then copied in inferior renditions by many manufacturers. They also made a snake, bear's head and several other animal rings which had design copyrights. Additionally, they had a beautiful line of bridal jewelry, men's diamond rings, brooches and cocktail rings including a beehive ring made with a choice of multiple gemstones. Trademark was Baumf. My father and I dealt with them for decades.

What does LA stand for on 14 k Gold Women's Vintage Watch

I have a watch with the letters LA in the back of the watch on the inside of the case that covers the movement. The A in LA is inside the L and is a bit smaller than the L still in upper case letters. I would like to know who made the watch, the movement says Geneve on the front and Orano 17 j on the back of the movement. I think it is from the 1930 40s era and looks custom made. XX on 585 Necklace
by: Anonymous

Hi Peggy thanks for writing in....

We've had a few one X marks on Jewelry questions, and a XXX mark on jewelry question but so far, not a XXXX mark (which happens to also be an australian beer) and this will be our first XX mark jewelry question. Congratulations!

Here are some X info links:

https://www.antique-jewelry-investor.com/is-this-an-egyptian-ring--comments.html

Gold Wedding Band XXX Comments

Another thing to consider is that X as far as we can tell, in some instances might be marked on gold:
XXX = Gold Content or .750 3/4 or 18 of 24K :-)

and just to confuse us even more, XXX with another X above the three in the center is a US maker's mark.

585 are percentages of gold content. They often are the only marks on items of European or Asian origin. Sometimes they'll have the karat equivalent stamped alongside: 585 (or 583) is equal to 14K, 750 is 18K, 417 is 10K, 333 is 8K, etc.

Happy Hunting!

Hi Dominic great hearing from you, however, we need an image of the mark, and further information such as a description of the necklace, as much details as possible, in order to conduct our research. Small details, like, where on the necklace the marks appear, provide clues. The weight's important, especially in view of the gold prices.

You can work the price of the gold store of value yourself, based on today's gold price, by using a special equation to calculate the gold value, using caratage, the current gold price and weight indices.

'How to work out the scrap value of gold' is an article that guides you through the process in 6 easy steps. The link to the guide is in the Jewelry Resources Here...

If the item was made in US after 1922, you might try researching in the "US jewelry marks, edition - 1922" in the Jewelry Resources Here.

You're always welcome to submit a follow-up submission and upload a an image. Just type "A over 14k Gold Logo | Necklace" so we can assign to this question here quickly and cut down response time.

a "p" before 14k on a wedding band

Value of a Wedding Band
by: Anonymous

Hi Edward

thanks for writing in!

The mark "P 14 K" could be the sponsor mark, including the 14K. In other words, the "14K" serves the purpose of the sponsor mark and the gold standard. There is actually a US sponsor mark 14K - P. & A. LINTON Co. (on 14K Gold Filled & Plated Band Rings, Manufacturing Jewelers, Providence, RI, USA) - ca 1887 - 1908.

I had a very quick search and had no luck with the P before the 14K

I would take the wedding band down to your local jeweler and ask him to acid test it for you. It shouldn't cost much. There are some really ambiguous marks on gold colored metal, not to say that your band is necessarily gold plated.

For instance, they used to advertise 14K gold plated rings, in a 1898 Chicago advertisement - "Fine Gold Shells Rings" - (How to be a Jewelry Detective by C. J. Bell) which are in reality all gold filled, so anything is possibly.

Acid testing by filing using the longest, thinest, sharpest-edged testing file, in an inconspicuous spot. Never use a long file mark as it will not only damage the piece but it will also diminish its value.

If the "nick" is done well, it might take a jewelers loupe to detect. Info on how to use a jewelers loupe can be found here.

This is the only way you can be certain unless you have digital gold testing equipment that can read plating. Some gold testing equipment can determine gold plating.

Don't forget the "heft" or weight of the ring and the antique store of value affects the price.

best wishes

14 kt gold ring - Alexandrite?

by K.O.
(NH)

I have a 14 kt white gold Alexandrite ring.

There is a small diamond gem on the inside of the band. This is an actual diamond gem, I don't mean the shape of a diamond.

The letters " EI or E1 " are before the diamond. It also says 14kt.

I am wondering what the letters stand for, and if the diamond indicates anything. What are the chances the gem is a natural alexandrite?

Alexandrite Oracle
by: Anonymous

The diamond accents or the numbers or the fact that it's 14K stamped on the metal won't tell you if this stone is a natural alexandrite or a synthetic. There is synthetic alexandrite available on the market and only an expert can tell the difference. The stone has to be tested at a gem lab. The price per carat if it does turn out to be natural alexandrite will be money well spent.

Due to the presence of oxide of chromium, alexandrite appears dull grass-green by daylight but by electric light it appears yellowish or reddish yellow and by soft candle-light it appears reddish.

Here is an interesting thread with links to photos, etc about alexandrite.

Gold Plating or Real Dahab
by: Yvonne

Hi Shelly

Gold plated pieces can usually be detected by close examination at the wear points with hand lens under incandescent light; ie. connection points (bracelets, necklaces, brooches, etc) where the metal links meets or near the connections & around clasp, rings are a little more difficult, look for wearing of the surface of the gold, peeling or flaking are usually pretty easy to detect with old pieces over 50 years old.

The hand lens is a great investigative tool.

The "Provenance" of the Jewelry Designer
by: Yvonne

Hi Sherri

a makers mark indicates that it is higher quality than average only because the jewelry manufacturer has gone to the trouble really - it's not definitive, for example, if the maker mark is a well-known mark such as famous jeweller CARTIER then Yes we know the mark will increase the value of the jewelry so it is in this sense that not only does provenance of the owner reflect value but so does the provenance of the actual jeweler.

Jackie Kennedy's faux pearls sold for over 100,000 due to the provenance of the owner. While Faux materials used in the construction of Miriam Haskell costume jewelry designer will not detract from the value on account of the faux materials simply because of the famous designer's name that appears and validates the piece - Miriam Haskell.

I hope this helps to clarify why designer marks impact or don't have so much of an impact on the overall value of a piece of jewelry. There are lots of movie actors but not so many Hollywood movie stars.

The reputable jeweler you have mentioned should be able to provide some clues into the maker, and will at least know how to have the stones tested. Having said that, jewelry lovers and investors are beginning to realize that they can successfully test many gemstones at home thanks to the advances in affordable and accurate gem identification testing kits and tools that a gemologist might not like to talk too much about ;-) Do get back to us with any follow-up information. If you are still stumped after all this, and after having the stone identified you can send through photos of the piece and the marks and I will investigate the history of this ring further.

Warmly,

Yvonne

JG Ring with large cut stone
by: Yvonne

Good morning Sherri

I agree with you, being informed that your ring is "very valuable" based on these two letters alone is misleading information. There is JG JLRY trademark which is not the same as the two letters - JG. Understanding the marks on your jewelry would take an expert researcher still considerable time to research and therefore I suggest getting an appraisal carried out by a reputable company. A good appraiser would attempt to decipher these marks before according a value. Photos would be necessary in all cases. The question of the marks is a big missing piece in the valuation process but so is something else that was not mentioned; the name of the large emerald-cut stone on the top. They all provide important information which would help to steer the appraiser in the right direction. The design would also provide photographic clues for the appraiser.

Warmly,
Yvonne

Hallmarking in the USA
by: Layla

I believe Jewelry manufacturing in the USA only started around 1840 although you do find many pre 20th century pieces in the USA stamped with European and British marks. This is due to the early settlers ties with the "old country" though.

United States use "k" mark for gold measurement and the UK use "ct" mark.

It was not until 1906 that regulations concerning the "hallmarking" were issued in the USA. As there is no supervised system of hallmarking in the USA, you can't technically say it is "hallmarking" in the strict sense, rather it is referred to as "manufacturers' marks".

14K could have been stamped as early as 1906 in the USA.

Hope this helps

You can easily distinguish gold marks used in the USA from those in Great Britain by the abbreviation. The UK spelling is "carat" which is shortened as "ct", while in the USA the abbreviation is "k" for "karat".

British Gold Designation and Carat
by: Yvonne

Please note that the British use ct (carat) instead of k for gold designation.

How they came up with the term carat (weight measurement) is quite interesting in itself...the term is often confused with the unit of weight for diamonds and other precious gemstones, also called carat.

Thousands of years ago, merchants in ancient Mesopotamia used carob seeds to balance their scales, and that is where we get the word "carat" - the term used for units of weight.

I think I have a genuine 14K Puffed Mariner / Gucci Link Chain (mayby) ???

by Dabonboza
(Los Angeles, CA. USA)

End of Chain

End of Chain

Pic was taken with basic digital cam, no frills, close-up very difficult - even in macro!

Anyway; here we go: The chain length is 22 inches. The chain weight is 16.69 Grams. Each link is about 6 mm in length. Each link is about 4 mm in width. The Thickness of each link is about 1 mm. Now the hard part, Markings - aka/ Hallmark! I will describe as best I can, using around the head 3 lens magnifier with a light! Attached to the clasp there is a link with markings. The Top marking (singular) appears to read as numerical 585. The bottom has several markings (Plural), reading from left to right I thing they are as follows: First is a STAR, looks to be 5 point. Next (just to the right of the star) is what "I think" is the number 74. Lastly; on the extreme right are the letters AR. For what it's wo

rth the clasp is also marked 585. Anything else is probably scratch and / or dirt. Do you know what I have? Thank You in advance for taking the time to read this monolog and give it some thought. Sincerely, BAB...

Update for this post!
by: Dabonboza

I have been scouring the internet in attempts to figure out the Hallmarking's. Ergo, I update as follows:

The STAR (5 point): This seems to be representative of "The Star of Italy" and seeing this one can assume that the chain was made in Italy.

The number 74: I "may" be reading this erroneously! It is more likely that the number is "14" and representative of the 14K content.
*** It is also possible that the number 74 is correct! In this event it may represent the person who made it! Or, the year it was made! However; I seriously doubt this is so. 14K seems far more logical.

The Letters AR: This appears to represent the actual town in Italy where the chain was made. In this case my research shows Arazzo, Italy! I have yet to check if such a town actually exists. Probably does though.

As to the number 585: This is equal to about 14K. It seems such a chain would not actually be sold in Italy, as they require a minimum of 18k to sell there.

Chain history: It was very legally purchased by my father who left it to me upon his death. He undoubtedly purchased it. However; I have not a clue as to where, other than NYC. He did have his own Jeweler. But; he also purchased at reputable stores - I.e.. Tiffany's etc... One last note!

The original clasp broke after many, many years of my opening and closing it. My friend (Joe - a Jeweler in NYC replaced it for me. He is a good old Italian man who stated the replacement was "as near as identical to the original as he could provide!" I watched him do it - the original Hallmark was maintained! When I asked him "How Much $$" he replied "Nothing my friend - it's a gift." He is a good dude!

I have yet to have the chain tested and appraised. I was too preoccupied at the time to ask Joe to do it! I have no chemicals or acids. However; I do have a Multi-Meter! Can it be done with that? It Passed the magnet test with flying colors!

I have since sold the piece. I did find two other bug brooches by "KEVIN" on the Internet. Both sold for double what I sold mine for but I still did very well. The new owner should be cherishing this special bug brooch!!

Hallmark NK 14 585 ?

Hallo! I have an inherited antique ladies' wristwatch in platinum set with brilliants. The word 'platinum' appears engraved on the inside of the (tiny) case but there are no hallmarks, merely the number 5206 on the case back. No maker's name on the movement, just 'M.P.G' on the barrel.

The strap, however, appears to be white gold, judging by the '14 585' hallmark. What intrigues me are the letters 'N K' within the outline of an open book (rectangle with the corners higher than the middle). Any idea to whom this refers (presumably the maker)? Thanks in advance!

14k gold ring with mark | Possibly Alexandrite

Just got a beautiful ring that is 14k gold. Supposed to be Alexandrite surrounded by diamonds. I found a mark inside and wondered if it was a hallmark. It is a capital L in Times type font with an oval around the top line of the L, almost like a halo. Can you identify this mark?
Thanks.

There's a really Interesting thread about russian alexandrite gemstone at the following link here. Even an interesting test anyone can do to see if it is real alexandrite gemstone or synthetic.

Alexandrite Gemstone & Synthetic Alexandrite
by: Anonymous

Hi - sounds like it might be a maker's mark. Is it an Antique Gold Ring? If no, try US Jewelry Marks 1922 - From the Jeweler's Index 1922 edition. You will find the link in the Jewelry Resources.

The original source of Alexandrite was near Ekaterinburg , in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The stone was discovered there is 1830, the year Alexander II came of age; and it is named after him.

The stone is imitated by synthetic spinel, and in great quantities by synthetic corundum, (incorrectly marketed as synthetic alexandrite).

Get the stone tested at a gem lab :-)

Happy Hunting!

R/S within a shield on 14K gold ring

by Sara
(Philadelphia, PA)

The ring

The ring

I have a ring and would like to know if anyone has information on the maker's mark. I attached some pictures. The stones, we believe, are two diamonds with a blue topaz in the center. It is 14K gold. There is another marking/etching inside the ring, it may be a serial or lot number? I believe it reads "R3294". It's very hard to see.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I have a 14K pin/pendant of 2 swans and the mark on the back in capital block letters is JNC14K in a rectangle. The family story is that grandpa had this made for grandma in the USA but we don't know anything else. Thank you for your assistance.

Swan Jewelry
by: Anonymous

Hi Paulette

thank you for your submission! This is what collecting antique & heirloom pieces is all about, retelling the history of the piece, we keep the dream alive......

I have come to the realisation that antique jewelry investors are the biggest romantics on the planet, we invest in memories, even of other peoples! lest we forget, because as long as we still have those memories (like the extended mind theory for the cognitive scientists) they are with us. Jewelry significance as mind tools is so undervalued.

I have a pair of gilt earrings set with peridots, I purchased them because I fell in love with the shape, and now looking at your swan brooch, with the two swans facing each other, I can see where the artist has drawn inspiration.

It is possible that the maker did not register the mark.
As you probably already know the metal is 14 carat gold.
Thank You for sharing.

Kind Regards
Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre
