Gold ring hallmark help

I have a gold ring with the words saying... OB, three crowns and G?

Chris, this thread is asking about the marks on this particular antique gold bracelet. if there is no relation with the marks on this bracelet with the marks inside your ring, could you please ask the question on the hallmark help forum or alternatively you might try searching this site for the search term - OB - the OB maker's mark has been covered before.

    Hallmark

    Hallmark

Hi, Can anyone assist me in identifying the hallmark on the vintage 14KT flower/tulip bracelet referenced in the attached photos (I have attached photos of the hallmark and of the bracelet). I received this bracelet from my Mother's estate. I would guess that my Mother purchased the bracelet new in the 1960's or thereabouts. Thank you for your help.

    Turkish Gold Jewelry
    by: Yvonne

    Good Afternoon Claire

375 is the millesimal value for 9 ct gold. Caratage does count and can provide many clues not just percentages of precious metal. It is a British Standard mark that was introduced in Britian in 1854. Why a 9ct gold standard appears on Turkish gold is a bit of a mystery.

If you could describe the bracelet - where it came from and how old you think it might be and any other information you think is important that would help us to understand more about the metal content, your item and a little more about the hallmarking system in Turkey in general it would be very much appreciated.

If you would like to list your item on the Jewelry Exchange you are more than welcome. Jewelry made in Turkey and the middle-east, despite the gold content is in high demand at present. The Jewelry Exchange is the most affordable way to advertise your jewelry across the world. Much easier and cheaper than most auction sites.

The color change gemstone mined in Turkey called Zultanite is also taking the gemstone world by storm. We were recently asked to promote on this website the world's second largest Zultanite gem from Turkey.

    Best Regards
    Yvonne

    Test Gold Composition
    by: Anonymous

Hi thank you for writing in with the following question:

"This bracelet was given to me as a gift years ago. I would like to know if you know anyhing about this makers mark and from what time period it was made? Maker's mark looks like a Capital G Super-imposed over a Capital E and also has the number 585."

OK. The numbers 585 is the decimal carat mark for 14K, 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold (Asian for overseas market. Common in USA. Russian 584.)

Overlapping G E letters in an oval was used by Emblem Inlay Corp. (Gold Inlaying) There are so many different styles of writing the letters though so could not confirm without seeing the mark.

Your local jeweler can acid test for you to determine the gold composition. This piece looks like it has good weight to it.

Is it a Regular or an Irregular Hexagon Shape?
    by: Anonymous

    Good Evening Martin

can you tell if the hexagon has equal sides, ie, a REGUALAR HEXAGON or is it a a closed six sided figure with non equal sides? Also is there an image inside of this frame?

An irregualar Hexagon frame with a core image inside of the frame of
    1. the head of chamois, (750 gold) and a second core image in an REGULAR Hexagon (equal sides) of
    2. the head of a fox, (580 gold) was used during 1919-1937 for the two GOLD standards above mentioned, in HUNGARY. The Chamois is a goat species and native to the mountains in Europe.

You might need to use a Jeweler's Loupe to see the image as it being an old piece of jewellery, the image could have worn down over time.

    Good Luck!

It is a very rich yellow in colour and is very nice but I just wondered how old it might be and what does the BJL mean and the large 22 stamp on it. it is fully hallmarked, but does not say 9ct or 9k just 375 plus the other stamps I can't really see.

    by: Drew

Hello, the 375 is the percentage of pure gold in a piece of jewelry.375 parts of a 1000 parts pure gold. 14k Gold is 585 / 1000 parts pure gold, 18k is 750 /1000. The other marks are just likely the manufacturers logo and codes. 9k is less gold content, but is very strong and durable.

    Hi Francis

could you please send in a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission. Please type "Birds of a Feather | Gold Bracelet" in subject title.

The title of your post caught my eye. Feathers was the theme for Chanel, as a prelude for things to come at the Biennale des Antiquaires Grand Palais Paris 15 - 22 September 2010 .

Chanel designers surfaced with an articulate brooch that Diane Kruger wore in her hair at Cannes and the Exact replica of the Chanel plume brooch, created by Mll. Coco Chanel in 1932!

It reminded me of the PLUME diamond brooch designed in 1935, by Edward, the Prince of Wales for his future bride, Wallis Simpson, a plume-shaped diamond brooch, that was later sold to Elizabeth Taylor.

( Wallis & Edward) plume diamond brooch is ia feather plume that Wallis Simpson Wore. You can see it Here.

    Markings on Handmade Jewellery
    by: Valerie

The markings on this piece are far too small to determine, and since it is a hand made item , we have no way to identify the maker because there is no one comprehensive data base of jewellery makers or goldsmiths which can help us.

A check of known makers has revealed nothing similar to the mark you think this to be but that is not unusual given the number of designers and countries which produce hand made gold jewellery.

Question about a necklace that was passed on..
    by: Yvonne

Hello, I've only now discovered this question that could have been posted in the pearl help forum providing the necklace is made of pearl. You have asked some very good questions, however, the reply depends on information I am not privy too.
i.e. I do not know for certain if the necklace is pearl. I do not know your location to match you up with an antique dealer who repairs jewelry in your area?

if the antique necklace is made of pearls "age-appropriate" restringing would be advisable. After-all you do not want the necklace to look brand new again. The beauty of jewelry belonging to an earlier time is in the quality of age. Walking the fine antique jewelry and pearl "repair" line needs some finesse - only consult with jewellers in your area who are experienced in repairing antique jewelry and restringing antique pearls.

    Warm Regards
    Yvonne

I also have a strand of pearls given to me about 30 years ago from a family member. The clasp looks like silver and is a fish tail type clasp, it has an "H" on it. Assuming it's Honora? Can anyone tell me a general worth. Strand is about 15 inches.

Question about a necklace that was passed on
    by: Anonymous

    Hi -
I recently was given a necklace from my Mother in Law. She received it from our grandmother when she gave birth to my husband. When I had my son, she handed it down to me.

    Questions:
    - My necklace also has a cursive H on the clasp
    - It is a beautiful 14K necklace, but some of the links need to be repaired. Is it a good idea to repair these older pieces or is it best to keep as is. I would love to restore it and enjoy it.
    - If repairing is a good idea - who should I talk to?
    - Where is the best place to have these older pieces appraised. It is at least 47 years old (age of my husband) and it may have been in the family longer than that.

14K gold dragonfly with blue enamel and 12 pearls
    by: Anonymous

I have a brooch made of enamel over 14K gold with real tiny pearls making up the body of the dragonfly. The hallmark is a fancy H with the "14" placed above the H cross bar and the "K" located below the H cross bar. This same hallmark appears on the wingtip of the dragonfly as well as the catch on the clasp. There is also a pat. No.that looks like 3086 but I am unsure. Does this sound like a Honora Jewelry piece and if so, from what year?

    H in Cursive
    by: Anonymous

H in cursive was a trademark for Honora Jewelry Company - GOLD JEWELRY. It may come as a bit of a surprise to some people (it was to me) but Honora Jewelry Company didn't only make pearl jewelry......

HONORA JEWELRY: Early 1950's - Present

The Honora Jewelry Company was founded by Jerome Grossbardt with headquarters located at 48th Street, New York, NY in the early 1950?s with the name standing for quality, value, and beauty in the jewelry industry. The Honora Company has designed and produced a wide variety of styles and pearl types jewelry into bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings and pendants using fine quality fresh water cultured pearls from top producer in Japan, China and various South Sea countries.

    http://www.jacksonjewels.com/Reference/Jewelry_Companies_G-I.htm

The jewelry pieces created and manufactured by Honora use 14k, 18k and platinum base metals and strung their products with the highest quality string available including some pearls hand-tied with silk thread or microcord, some with diamond spacers between each pearl, accents of leather, and clasps of sterling silver and woven stainless steel. Honora?s fact sheets indicates ?our trademarked ?PEARL GAME?, a 34? opera which breaks down into a variety of wearable lengths, is available with or without diamond rondels (spacers between each pearl) , and continues to be the industry standard for a fine basic cultured pearl strand?. Mark: Tag: ?HONORA in an oval circle?. (THIS WAS THEIR TAG FOR A FINE CULTURED PEARL STRAND). If purchased new or the sale of nearly new item, a stamped pouch is enclosed with the jewelry piece.

Honora pearls, prized for their beauty and value, are extremely fashionable and highly well-priced according to the materials used and designs created in a variety of styles and pearl types (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants, and rings) using high quality fresh water cultured pearls, mostly purchased today from the Chinese growers (makers of upper quality range of production, increase in size, roundness and spectacular colors of pearls), and high quality carat gold and platinum metal.

Honora, through the years has and is also designing and manufacturing fine 14k and 18k gold, and sterling silver jewelry including some with genuine diamonds and gemstones.

    Sponsors Mark on Clasp
    by: Yvonne

    Hi,
Does the necklace contain colored gemstones, diamonds, non-precious stones, amber, rhinestones?
I'm assuming it's not rhinestone costume jewelry as most vintage rhinestone jewelry was made from white metal called "pot metal" to accentuate the clear rhinestones, unless they are colored rhinestones, which could also be a possibility.

You mention the hallmark is on the clasp, fittings and findings often can help circa date the piece. Is it a box clasp or a fold-over catch? the latter is often associated with less expensive pieces.

    best regards

Hello I have recently been cleaning out an old woman's attic after she passed away and have come across quite a bit of old vintage coins and jewelry.

Well my question is, does all vintage (antique) gold have a hallmark? Im sending a picture that I hope will help. It is very heavy and doesnt feel like a fake piece of jewelry. Much of the other finds that ive come across have been from the early 1900's . thank you

Is it Gold if not Marked?
    by: Anonymous

Hi Jayson thanks for writing in.

This is really an important question. Could the gold colored metal really be gold if it's not marked?

The metal content can determine if a piece is costume jewelry or fine jewelry. The type of metal and the marks on the metal can have an enormous effect on the price.

Inspect each piece of jewelry very carefully with a jewelers loupe, marks can turn up in the most unexpected places. If you do not know how to use a jewelers loupe click here.

Vintage costume jewelry that is not gold but gold colored often looks a little bit too gold looking to be Gold.

Vintage Gold plated is often detected by carefully examining the points that get the most wear - you can often notice a wearing away of the gold at these wear points.

Nineteenth century costume jewelry was made using base metal such as steel, nickel silver, copper and brass, electroplated with gold or silver, this type of jewelry may be "die struck".

If still in doubt, your local jeweler can acid test to determine metal content.

    KK mark on bracelet clasp

    by Donna
    ( Georgia)

What does it mean if there is "KK" stamped on the clasp of a "gold" bracelet, but no numbers. This bracelet is probably 35-40 years old and is fairly heavy, serpentine-style and even though it has seen frequent wear over all these years from my mother and myself, it has a perfect gold color, no discolorations.

I am unable to upload a picture. I am very curious as to what the "KK" stands for. The k's are close but not touching and both face forward. Thank you!

I recently purchased a bracelet that looks to be old. It has blue stones and white little diamond around each blue stone. On the back there is a KK stamped. But they are together and one is slightly higher than the other one. The shorter K connects at the start of the bottom upper K. I hope that makes sense.

KK mark on my dads gold ring
    by: Anonymous

    Hello,

My mother recently gave me my dads gold wedding band. He pasted away many years ago. The story about this ring. My mom and dad lived in Japan from the 50s to the 70s. My dad was in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at several bases around Japan. My mother told me that my dad bought this ring at a base called Yokota. I did not ask her what year he bought it so my guess is in the late 50s, about the time they got married. I dont know anything else about the ring except that the inside reads 18kt and it has a hallmark of KK stamped inside an indented diamond shape.

where in the world are you? I might be able to recommend a reputable jeweller in your area. Depends where you are.

This video is good to determine the karat or gold purity and the value of the gold but if you just have the one chain - I would advise going to a reputable jeweller in your area and asking them to test it for you.

If it is Italian it would probably be gold.

My father gave me a necklace for my graduation present there are no markings on it except for the back of the clasp which has K K . The chain is more like a box weave style I wish I could add an image of it it's very old he has had it since the 80's and the man he bought it from said it was italian.

Other than that I have no history on it and when I took it into a local gold buyer she tested it and told me that it was testing like a 14k but she believed it was plated or something though my dad swears it's solid.

How can you tell if it's solid or plated?

And who could I take it to that I could trust to tell me the truth instead of wanting to by it at a cheaper price?

    Hi Brenda

what an interesting find Brenda! Your local jewelry can test the gold purity for you. You might like to send in an image in a follow-up submission, without an image of the mark, it's impossible to provide a definitive identification - there are many initial marks, that do look similar. After you determine the gold content (and provide images) you might like to have your item appraised online.

    I have a KK chain
    by: Brenda, Ma.

Recently I went to Texas to visit my son who is in the military. While I was there I went to a second hand store and purchased some old costume jewelry in a zip lock bag. In the bag was a "gold" pocket watch chain with the letters KK not touching, on the clasp. It is an old chain and looks like 18K gold but there are no other marks.

The links on each end are soldered closed so they can't be pulled apart. I was very excited when I read about the KK mark on Anonymous's bracelet clasp. I plan to have my chain tested for sure now to see if it is gold. Thanks.

    KK on Bracelet
    by: Anonymous

    Hi thanks for writing in...

would you happen to have anymore information or any history on this bracelet? Do you know where/how your Mum acquired it? The initials, "KK" on the gold bracelet clasp are the initials of the firm or the individual who registered the mark.

Without having the benefit of a photo it's pretty much all speculation, however, if it helps, the initials K K facing this same direction as this - K K, with the letters close together but not touching, are the initial marks of the - KUZMA KONOV (Gold & Silver Smiths, St. Petersburg, Russia) - ca 1890s - 1917.

Rolled Gold & Gold Filled Jewelry
    by: Anonymous

Marilyn it's possible that "R" indicates Rolled-Gold. There are in fact lots of different marks on rolled gold articles, some a really confusing.

With Rolled-Gold articles, the thickness of rolled gold can vary, so its usually measured in Microns if the layer of gold is uniform, otherwise in Milliemes. It can be so well done that it's virtually indistinguishable from solid gold. There is a test you can do yourself with an acid testing kit to determine if the metal is Gold or Rolled-Gold.

Find details on how to acid test if the article is indeed gold or rolled gold here.

Rolled gold is just an earlier term for "Gold-filled".

Art Deco 18ct gold bracelet Info
    by: Anonymous

Hi Susan sounds like an interesting bracelet and a great investment! The upside down tear drop shape could be the maker's mark, or a country mark but I would need a photo of the marks to research further.

Yes, it could be 18k gold, what makes me suspect it is 18 kt is the millesimal value of .750 tha also appear on the bracelet. The marks don't sound like British Hallmarks.

If you examine the bracelet under a jeweler's loupe at the places that have received the most wear, if it is gold plated, you may be able to see the tell-tale signs of gold plating, ie. peeling, flaking wearing away of the surface layer of gold. Some pieces are exceptionally well done and hard for the untrained eye (and the trained eye) to tell the difference.

You local jeweler can acid test to determine if the bracelet is solid gold or not. Good quality digital gold testing equipment can also determine if it's solid gold, even down to the gold purity value.

More info on At Deco Jewelry can be found Here.

Info and Pic of the French Eagle Head.
    by: Anonymous

    Hi thanks for writing in.

Pure gold is 1000 fine; 18k gold is 75 percent or 750 fine. Consequently, an 18k ring made in Europe would be stamped 750.

The eagle head hallmark has been the French 18+ gold guarantee mark since 1838 to the present.

Just to let you know that there are a lot of birds and bird head marks on metal. Examine the mark carefully and be sure it is the Guarantee Gold Purity Mark Eagle of France. Here is the French Eagle mark to compare with...

    Panther on Bracelet ?

I have a 9ct gold bracelet with what I believe is cubic ziconia stones all the way round. On the back of the clasp where the hallmark is stamped 375 you can also see a panther? Does this ring any bells to anyone? Thanks

375 is the amount of gold. if you go to a jeweler he will tell you if the stones are real diamonds & if you have a magnifying glass or Jewelers Loupe, look closely at the stones & if you can see through them they are not real diamonds & if you can't see through them, they are real diamonds. good luck & have fun

    Big Cat Jewelry Mark
    by: Anonymous

    Hi Laura

thank you for sending in the following hallmark question:

"I have a 9ct gold bracelet with what I believe is cubic zirconia stones all the way round. On the back of the clasp where the hallmark is stamped 375 you can also see a panther? Does this ring any bells to anyone?"

Laura, first up - the stones that go all the way around the bracelet - like a tennis bracelet could be glass, zircons, natural or synthetic zircons , colorless zircons can be mistaken for diamonds and diamonds mistaken for zircons.

Zircons are doubly refractive when examining under jeweler's loupe. If you do not know how to use a jeweler's loupe you can find out here.

The stones could be rhinestones, another famous imitator of diamonds. The other possibility is of course, created diamonds or natural diamonds.

The mark you described as a panther - a big cat, could be the Leopard Head which has been the London Town mark from 1822 to the present.

I would have your jeweler test the stones and have this piece appraised.

    best wishes,

Ram's Head on Bracelet | Possibly French

I have a very old and heavy white gold bracelet which has a ram's head which is on the outside of repousse like design. I believe my grandmother may have gotten it in Paris but I am not sure. I can't find any record of the maker's mark, and I can't believe it's silver because it's so heavy and always is shiny.

    Ram head stamped bangle
    by: Jconley646

Someone commented above with exactly what I have, a handmade bangle bracelet, hand cut filigree, very heavy with a stamped Rams head facing rightist on the outside along with what looks like an M to the left. I took some pics holding a loupe to the camera lens, but it is a little worn from wear. In person you can see it clearly. I would love to know the origin of the mark. I'm almost positive it's sterling silver, I tested it myself with that chemical kit and scratch stone. I have 2 other smaller silver bangle bracelets that are similarly made but have what looks like a bulls head stamped on the outside. Can I upload pictures in these comments?

A Photo of the RAM PLEASE!
    by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

there are MANY very many animal marks on antique jewelry and 20th century jewelry. Researching an identifiable mark can take hours of research.

animals marks that look like rams, sheep, deers, unicorns, bulls with and without humps, kangaroos (there actually is a Kangaroo mark and it's a BRITISH maker!) and lions (the big cat marks is another volume) Add to this - the problem that what I see as a unicorn
a visitor from South Africa may see as a springbok.

Add to this complex mix the probability that the mark is NOT A NEW FRESH MARK as Hallmark Help is dedicated to Antique and 20th Century Jewelry and as one would expect, most likely faded over time and hard to see clearly. Sometimes just barely visible.

Add to this mix is the fact that not everyone has perfect vision, and not everyone is using a magnifying glass to describe the animal they see.

This is why a picture is SO IMPORTANT in HALLMARK DETERMINATION especially when it comes to animal marks.

If any person has a picture of a ram's head mark and would like to contribute and would like to Send Me an attachment of the photo -
I will upload a photo in this discussion thread for the benefit of our visitors and the repository of jewelry hallmark knowledge in general.

    Best Regards
    Yvonne

    Ram's Head on SILVER
    by: Anonymous

A Ram's head (directly facing you as you look at the ram mark) appears on Bourges, France - SILVER ca. 1784 -1791.

You are welcome to submit a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission. Please type "Ram's Head On Bracelet | Follow Up" in the subject field.

Perhaps the bracelet was rhodium plated at a later date. Rhodium is a white metallic element that is of the platinum family . Because of its HARD REFLECTIVE FINISH it is often used as a plating for jewelry.

I don't really know when she gave it to my mother or when she acquired it.i would guess it is at least 60 years old or more. Jean, it's not an antique gold Italian bracelet but you say the bracelet has good weight to it, weight is sometimes called - heft. Good weight usually indicates quality (although not always).

Having the 18 ct gold mark plus the decimal equivalent for 18 carat gold suggests the bracelet is 18 carat gold. Is there any other reason for you to doubt the metal content?

    Bracelet Marking
    by: Anonymous

Hi Megan thank you for writing in.

All we can establish from your description is the piece is 9 carat gold which is the most hard wearing. 9K, 9ct or 375 (parts per 1000) or is 37.5% gold (mainly British Commonwealth countries. Not recognized in USA).

They sound like british hallmarks but I cannot picture the other marks you described, I'm not sure if you mean F & X? Also their are hundreds of animal marks. A photo of the marks would help our researchers. You can upload a photo in a follow-up submission if you like. Thankyou.

Correction on mark - Egyptian 12

    Egyptian gold purity & date
    by: Bronwen

Egyptian hallmarks. The second is an Arabic letter indicating the range of years during which the piece was made. For more info on that, see:
    http://www.mfti.gov.eg/affiliates/National_Productivity/AssayWeights/A03.htm

The first is a gold purity mark written using an alphabetic way of rendering numbers. The character that looks something like a 1 is a 1; the other is a 2. Given that Arabic is written right to left, you would expect these letter-numbers also to read that way. But in researching my own several pieces marked this way, I followed up finding at another site that the mark was '12' by taking a bracelet & a loupe to a native Arabic speaker who confirmed that it was a 12.

None of my pieces looks or tests like 21k. All are 12k rose gold, probably brought west by tourists.

Markings on Rose Gold Flat Curb Link Bracelet
    by: Anonymous

Hi Mrs Jenkins, the bracelet appears to be marked in the UK.

The BJF is what's known as the sponsor mark, and it's the initials of the firm or indiviual who submitted the piece for marking.

The anchor on its side is the town mark for Birmingham.

the 375 is the decimal gold mark. It is the same as 9K, 9ct or 375 parts per 1000, or is 37.5% gold and mainly used in British Commonwealth countries. It is Not recognized in USA. 9ct gold is the most hard wearing.

the something else that you cannot make out, might be a date letter.

    24K Gold Jewelry
    by: Anonymous

Hi Mel thanks for writing in!

24 Karat gold is often called 'fine gold'.

24 Karat gold is from 99.0% to 99.9% pure gold depending on a country's laws. In China, 24 Karat gold is called "Chuk Kam", which means "pure gold" and has a gold minimum of 99.0%.

According to the World Gold Council, in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, 24 carat (Karat) gold is the typical caratage (fineness)."

There is very little 24 karat gold jewellery sold in other parts of the world. Beautiful jewelry manufacturer in Turkey - see photo underneath.

24 Karat gold is soft and not very durable for jewelry. I wouldn't be wearing this antique gold bracelet with the 24K gold clasp anywhere outside the home.

Mixing other metals to create a gold alloy gives strength and hardness to gold jewelry. This means gold jewelry wears better, is less scratch resistant and will not be damaged or distort as readily as 24 Karat gold jewelry.

Just another thing, the 24K mark on the clasp doesn't mean the whole bracelet is 24 K. 24K is a rich, saturated bright yellow color. Does the color of the bracelet itself match the color of the clasp marked 24K ?

Here is a pic of 24K gold by Kurtulan - Turkey.

    Horse Head Marks on Jewelry
    by: Anonymous

Hi Yakov thank you for your question. These marks could be country hallmarks or town marks, or sponsors marks, or one of each.

We need to see a photo of the mark and also more information (whatever you might have already discovered) about the piece will help.

If you read this page about horse head hallmarks and determination, you will understand why we need more information. ;-)
You are welcome to upload a photo in a follow-up submission if you like.

    Antique Diamond Bracelet Mark

Bracketed Number on Clasp is the Only Mark.

Do you know if this is a jewelers mark? This is my bracelet on ebay at the moment and I'm still trying to find someone who recognizes this. I know, from the appraiser, who didn't recognize it, that it may just be a frame around the number identifying the piece. But I can't help feeling as though it might be recognized by another expert.
Would appreciate your thoughts. Attached is photo.

I suspect the maker of the bracelet is Oscar Heyman Brothers and that's their secret mark. It would be worth your time to contact them in NY with the number on the bracelet.

    Numbers on Antique Jewelry
    by: Anonymous

Hi Mary thanks for your question.

Occasionally you find a piece of jewelry with a British Register mark. However since 1884 the registry mark usually has "RDNO" stamped before the number.
    So Not a registry mark.

On the other side of the pond, the United States has issued patents since 1790, however Patent numbers usually have the letters "PAT" before the numbers.
    So Not Patent marks.

A Design number is always exciting to find on a piece of antique jewelry, but as you mentioned it was purchased from eBay, I don't think it will be a design number.

Possibly a manufacturing number. More details will help, ie. metal composition, which antique diamond cut, etc.

All Though we found this bracelet buried under our house I wouldn't know how to tell if if is antique or not ?I just know when the house was built (1916)
and I Know that other people have either owned and or have rented this house before we purchased it 5 months ago and so I would have no clue if maybe someone had just lost it through recent years or so.
Is there anyway that someone can help me to indenitify whether if this is a antique bracelet just by looking at it under a microscope?

    High Karat Gold Bracelet
    by: Anonymous

Hi Lynne I'm assuming the metal is 935k. Although in your post you state that you can see no jewelry marks, the title of your post is "Hallmarks on a Bracelet 935 k".

The designation "k" means the bracelet was either made in United States or was made under export for United States. The percentage of other marks determine the "karat" of the gold.

18k gold is made up of 750 parts of gold and 250 parts of other metals. 935k is VERY HIGH Carat gold when you consider that 22k or 916 is made up of 916 parts gold and only 84 parts other metal.

The point is, 935k has only 65 parts other metal. The higher the carat the softer the gold. It is in remarkable condition, being buried under the house for so long. Or maybe that's why it's in such good condition. After-all the earth is the original home of the gold and the gemstones, IF the stones are genuine that is
    ;-)

You can find more information about gold facts here.

Are the stone genuine natural diamonds and sapphires?
Why would anyone set fake stones in high karat gold piece like this?

Well, either it's a truly stunning bracelet set with natural sapphires and genuine diamonds OR the high gold karat is smoke and mirrors causing you to THINK the stones are genuine.

Have the stones tested by your local jeweler.

    Thanks for writing in...

    Hi Heather,

I have found this website which gives you the dates for the gold and silver marks from Birmingham. The anchor mark on your bracelet indicates it was goldmarked/made in Birmingham England. From what I can tell, it looks like your bracelet was made in 1906, however it depends on the design of the "g".
Here is the link to the website:

I also have a 1 1/2 inch flexible mesh gold toned bracelet. It has similar markings that didn't quite make it entirely on the metal. It looks to be CT 18750 or CT 19750 along the outsides are slanted lines / & \ any clues what or who makes this. Very pretty gold color & shine. The botttom of the stamp did not make it all the way onto the edge of the metal so the bottom of the 8 or 9 is not on the metal. Please advise if possible. Thanks Dave & Debbie

18ct is the minimum gold standard for sale in italy. but the rhombus doesn't seem to fit, since 1968 Italian maker's marks form changed to a rectangle with pointed sides and a five pointed star symbol added on the left.

in a rhombus, often called a diamond, all the sides are equal, the opposite sides are parallel and the opposite angles are equal.

    A Gold Bangle
    by: Anonymous

The methods you described may give you an indication on whether or not the piece contains gold but they are not fool proof. The best thing you can do is invest in a testing kit. The kit will contain testing solution for all the variations of gold, silver and platinum. Also included should be a testing stone. (It is advised that you never apply solution directly to a piece of jewelry as it can damage it).

Gold is rarely ever pure, it is mixed with other alloys to make it strong/wearable, so the color you're seeing on the inside from cutting the piece doesn't have much relevance. I hope this helps.

there are a number of registered marks with letters and arrows through them, but cannot see letter D - this will take more research and images of the mark would be required.

You may need to throw a sprat to catch a mackerel and get an expert opinion carried out.

There is also the possibility that the mark is not registered.

    Markings are only claims
    by: Ivan Ivanovich

    Hello Bunny,

I would suggest that you get several (two or more) face to face opinions from jewelers. {Normally there will be no charge for such, especially if the business buys used gold jewelry items from private individuals.} An experienced jeweler can usually distinguish the "real thing" from most (but not all) fraudulently marked items (counterfeits) by just holding and visually examining them.

Your photo is not very clear, but is clear enough to cause my trained eye to suspect that your item may not be 18K gold. I can only read the "750" mark which claims it to be 18K gold. Other subtle details make me very suspicious.

While counterfeiting is thousands of year old; most counterfeits are fairly easy for an expert to spot. Starting about 30 years ago, the jewelry industry started being plagued by items that were marked as fine jewelry and appeared to be fine jewelry to even experienced experts like myself. I have seen both individuals and experienced jewelers be defrauded by such high quality counterfeits.

    Hope this is informative.

    Scratch Test for Gold

    Morning Kim

Bangle could be lined gold meaning its not solid gold. So would test gold by making a very small scratch mark deep enough to penetrate the top layer of gold at an inconspicuous place on item. Carefully apply a drop of nitric acid to the mark and see if the mark turns green or milky. There will be NO reaction if the bangle is either gold or mostly gold.

Interesting point Alison, you don't see that many platinum bracelets. The cost I suppose, with platinum being the most expensive precious metal, and bracelets requiring more metal than say a ring, a bracelet would work out too expensive for many of us. Also the 9 would suggest a gold standard.

    by: Anonymous

Items stamped like this are not gold they have a gold layer over the top but have very little value, the item will usually look very much like it is gold and it will test as gold but only on the outer surface. This type of jewelry will look nice and stay nice looking until the base metal starts degrading or corroding.

    Chapiado Hecho -CH
    by: Christine Romero

CH stands for Chapiado Hecho. Meaning yes it's plated, not fake enough to not carry real gold, but gold enough to carry another source material by it's manufacturer decision on selling a product that won't easily fade off, cause rash reaction to it's client's flesh, guarantee's their product to be stronger than gold because gold in purity itself can break much easier and to conclude it's price range...most of theses products are very cheap only because of the country it was made from.

The real price for the product should've been more higher than real pure gold only because it's cover gives it's glory, but it's under man made material gives it the strength for a longer lifetime production. This has been brought to you by your uneducated south central city of angels common sense homegirl that doesn't have it made but does know real against the fake, and can value it for the realest more than what lays under the hood. Like cheap wine can taste just like fine wine if you let it set for a while then pop that bottle and you know what you got and it didn't cost you an eye. Deuces!

    14 K CH | Bracelet
    by: Anonymous

Hi Chris thanks for writing in. The 14 K mark is the gold purity mark. It tells you the piece is made of 14K, 14ct or 585 (parts per 1000) or 58.5% gold. 14K is common in the US. It could be white gold or yellow gold.

The letters could possibly be a maker's mark. Not sure. Quite unusual. You might also like to search under the link, Jewelry Marks - US 1922 Edition
which is listed in the Jewelry Resources.

    Victorian Gold Bracelet w -> Heart <-

    by Hilda Hayson
    (Franklin, TN)

the hallmark is an arrow symbol, a heart symbol and an arrow, arrows point toward the heart symbol which is in the middle. Looks old c1910 or before. When the bangle opens it has a small bar that slides in and out of the clasp so that it "stretches" open and remains a closed circle (doesn't completely open). Don't know if this is rolled gold (gold filled) or 14K. It has a nice gold "look". Anyone know this mark arrow, heart, arrow? thank you.

british hall marks & anchor sideways
    by: eileen

hi, i can confirm that the lion is what we in the uk call 'lion passant' this indicates that the item was assayed in the uk.

the anchor states that it was made in Birmingham (on closer inspection you perhaps see two small 'c' below the anchor cross bar) if so this was used to as a special mark to commemorate the bi-centenary of the Birmingham office as your date letter coincides with this , year 1973.

the other point i would make is that gold has the anchor standing sideways as does platinum. silver however has the 'lion standard' an upright lion : our silver and gold mostly state the values ,ie, 375 9ct,585 14ct,750 18ct,and 916 22ct platinum is indicated by 950.. hope this is useful to find out makers stamp as i don't know this, regards, Eileen...

The 2 JMFC links within a diamond marking, what is there worth especially since they are linked along with Bob-o-links and blanks? What Co.made the blanks? I've just added an eye-popping video on the Antique Jewelry Investor Blog about the value of Silver. It's focus is on old coin silver which is .900 purity but it just gives you a good idea about the potential of investing in silver.

We need to see an image of the marks on the gold bracelet and also some idea of the age of the bracelet, otherwise it could take years of research;-( this info will help in a successful hallmark determination.

    Hi,
If the item is from Britain, there is a hallmark calculator that will help you. Have a look and see if any of your symbols are similar, select which ones
Theres' a link to the wizard on this site.
    The web address is http://www.gold-traders.co.uk/hallmarks/

I'm not sure if your bracelet fits with this though. The anchor is usually a sign of Birmingham , which is why I mentioned it, but it could be something else.

Found these in mom’s jewelry. Probably from 1940-60. Generally when mom purchased and was given most gifts. However. Mom kept everything going back to jewelry from her ancestors and civil war.
I don’t see how to upload photo. Mine are screw on. F is not in square. F has lines through it, feathers on arrow. Stamped 14k, pearl is not perfect has bumpy small spots under scope.

Is Arrow through F Fisher & Co. or Not ?
    by: Anonymous

    Hi Robbie

I love a good Hallmark Challenge! Robbie, it seems you have problems with the surround more than the F with an arrow going through the horizontal of the F letter which is the sponsor's mark for FISHER & Co. (Costume Jewelry, Newark, NJ, USA) - ca 1940s

Let's see if we can find some common ground here. Unfortunately, you haven't provided an image of the mark, so let's talk about the arrow and then your earrings. Does your arrow through F have feathers? I'm serious ;-) Examine the F carefully, is the letter a stylized capital F or not on your "twist-on" earrings? Also please tell us more about your earrings, the approximate age of your earrings? I think you mentioned they are pearl earrings, do you know if the pearls are Cultured Pearls or Pearl Imitations?

Robbie, this a free service, it's an opinion only, (without the benefit of a photo). If you think the mark under discussion is NOT Fisher & Co. provide evidence to support your view, or at least upload an image of the mark in a follow-up submission, so we can better determine.

it's not fisher. but I don't know who it is. it is for sure real gold. Maybe a different fisher than what is being discussed. But your original discussion started with an F with an arrow through it. And the response said and F in a box. I have yet to find the maker of yours and mine both, but I just recently started looking. My item is a pair of twist on pearl earrings.

    F with Arrow through It

    Yvonne,

Thank you for your post and reply regarding this very unusual and HEAVY 14K handmade bracelet that I have. Since it belonged to my grandfather here in NJ that is definitely plausible, although I have had it tested and know it is definitely not costume. Did this company also make gold jewelry?

    Regards,

    More Information
    by: Anonymous

    Hi Tammy

do you know the age of this bracelet ?

There is an antique gold work technique of mixing gold with other metals, to form colored gold or gold alloys, that was used in the late 1800s. For example, gold mixed with "copper" provided a red sheen or with "silver" a green tint and was used for stems and leaves and the matte surface complimented the satin finish of the gems in the jewelry, such as the velvet blue of turquoise and the glow of Natural Pearls.

Some of the best examples of this type of gold work can be seen in the pre-Victorian gentleman's seals which were considered very important items of costume jewelry at the time. Incredible skill and care went into these important accessories.

    1. When & where was the bracelet acquired, for example: purchased at a Flea Market or Auction 6 years ago OR picked it up at a Garage Sale from an Italian family 2 years ago etc

    2. A PHOTO PLEASE....(you're welcome to upload a photo of the mark in a follow-up submission. Please use 'follow-up tri color bracelet" in the name your question field.

    3. Any other information you may have already discovered and any other details that will help.

    best wishes,

    Italian Jewelry Marks - Vicenza
    by: Anonymous

Hi - the marks are not referring to the gold content. In 1934, there was a change to hallmarking in Italy.

Each smith was assigned a number and a two letter abbreviation of the province where the smith was registered was required.

TV is the abbreviation for the ITALIAN Province of Treviso.

    Italian Sterling Marks
    by: Anonymous

    Hi Nic

Sterling silver jewelry is highly collectible. Sterling Silver develops a lovely patina that is unmistakable with age.

The most common mark used on sterling silver jewelry are the numbers 925 - this is also the most common marked used on silver jewelry made in the USA.

The mark can be anywhere on the piece and the lettering can be very small. Small 925 marks can be found on all types of jewelry and findings, from the post of earrings, on clasps, on the inside of the bale of a necklace and on bracelet links and clasps.
Sometimes a loupe is necessary to see the marking clearly.

The 925 mark can often be seen alone or used in conjunction with the word "sterling" as in "sterling 925". Italian silver is often marked Italy 925.

Concerning the two letters K & ? if it was K R I would lean towards the italian Province of Crotone. This is where a jewelers loupe also known as a hand lens comes into it's own.

    Happy Hunting!

    Best Wishes

    Yvonne

No gold hallmark on gold bracelet.

I got a bracelet that is supposed to be 14 kt gold , but is only hallmarked JH or JW...

    Hi
Bracelets need to be checked all over with special attention to clasps and other parts that get a lot of wear. If it is an antique gold bracelet, the caratage mark could have worn off. In this case, you need to get the metal TESTED.

Also many jewelry pieces are not marked. Before 1906 karat marking was not compulsory.

    Opal Gemstone VICTORIAN BRACELET
    by: Yvonne

    Good Morning Emma!

Emma thank you so much for sending in an image of your beautiful bracelet! It makes cross-referencing that much easier. The maker of your 9 carat gold item is ERNST GIDEON BEK, Inc. (Novelties & Fashion Accessories, Pforzheim, Germany) - ca 1870s - 1919 (sold in the US by BINDER BROS).

The triangle in the hexagonal shaped box stands for the UK - Birmingham and will appear on all carat grades of gold, with the exception of 24 carat gold on Local & IMPORTED WARES - ca 1904 - Present.

The letter at the end is the year date.

The opals are also indicative of the Victorian era. A huge Opal field of "Color" (the early opal pioneers called Opal Gemstone - COLOR) was discovered around the 1870s, in Australia. Subsequently, it became Queen Victoria's favorite stone. Everything Victoria wore, her loyal subjects imitated. By the end of the century Opal Gemstone was one of the most fashionable of stones.

Jewelry as an art, flies in the face of conventional "Art" - because forms of jewelry art, don't need a gallery wall, they can be small in scale and exquisite, taking on the form of a shimmering opal bedecked femme fatal.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Warm Wishes,
    Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

    Can 750 White Gold Tarnish?
    by: Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Good Morning Julia in the UK!

Your Silver Colored Bracelet marked 750 could be made of Gold. The number, 750 is called the standard mark and shows the purity of the precious metal in parts per thousand. Is the number in a background shape Julia?

The background shape shows the metal (gold). So if the 750 is in a background rectangular shape with the corners cut off, like an octagon, with eight sides, shows the bracelet is made of 75% parts of gold by weight to 250 parts of other metals. The item is 75% gold which is equal to 18 karat gold ( 18 parts in 24) which is the traditional way describing gold purity.

CH is probably the sponsor's mark, and shows the person or company responsible for sending the article to the assay office. Traditionally, the mark is called the Maker's mark.

The small letter a could be a date letter, not sure.

Julia, Gold does not "tarnish" as such, (like Silver) however gold will loose its shine, just like other metals, if it gets dirty. White gold jewelry today (in particular rings) might be rhodium plated, which helps to keep it sparkly and shiny looking.

If you would like to get this piece appraised by our wonderful panel of professionals, I would be delighted to supervise your appraisal! The appraisal form can be found HERE

    Best Wishes,

    Yvonne

"21 carat gold, fineness of 875 is the recognized standard in Arabic countries."

    And

What you have described (I see no images) sounds like a classic Italian makers mark. The star, the 255 VI is an Italian maker's mark attributed to Gruppach Orfeo S.r.l.,Via Monte Zebio, 22 Vicenza, in the province of Vicenza, Italy with their mark registered on 30/8/1958 and still active as of 31/12/1971. Italy is a large supplier of jewelery and jewelery findings. It is feasible that the jewelry company that sold you the piece used Italian fittings to complete the item or the entire item is Italian. The star in the mark was not used until 1968.

High carat gold, India & the Middle-East
    by: Anonymous

22 and 21 carat gold is made of 91% and 87% pure gold respectively. These caratages are more prevalent or common in India and the Middle East. However, just because high caratages are more popular in the Middle-East and India, it doesn't necessarily follow, that the item was made in the Middle East or in India. My friend, for example, has just purchased a 21 carat gold brooch that was made in Australia.

Was the bracelet purchased in the Middle-East as your title suggests or are you just hoping? If it was definitely purchased in the Middle-East, you wouldn't be asking about its origin.

    Please be more specific!

After searching in all sorts of books, catalogues and other resources, unfortunately we could not find any relevant matches. The last 2 or 3 characters are perhaps letters and not the Latin Numeral II, so also tried all kinds of combinations like LANDELL, LANDAU, LAMDEM and many others to no avail.

Apologies, but it appears that there is simply no documented marks that resemble yours. It is possible that it is a retailer jeweler's name and this was made as a custom project for a client or for sale at their premises, but we could not find any specific references to that end.

Gazelle With Capital W Inside Sphere Hallmark On Vintage 18k Gold Bracelet

    by John Paul Gerard
    (Como, MS )

    Hello Hallmark Guru,
I inherited a gold bracelet from my Aunt in Konstanz, Germany. The hallmark has me stumped! It could be German, Austrian, or Swiss, because these countries are in close proximity to one another.

It is marked 750, with a leaping Gazelle / Springbok (Antelope) with a capital "W" underneath, inside a circle. Any help solving the mystery of the maker and origin of this beautiful Bracelet, will be much appreciated! Also what style would you classify the links to be? It reminds me of an etruscan bracelet I once saw.

Thanks a bunch! Kindest Regards, J.P.

    by: Anonymous

    Hi John Paul

yes, it certainly is a beautiful gold bracelet!

The millesimal value of 750 on Gold, which corresponds to the 18K, was used primarily by department stores in the USA - ca early to mid 20th C.  The Bracelet was probably made by Manufacturing Jewelers and distributed by John Wanamaker that later became Macys.  Although most of Macys marks usually show an Eagle, the Gazelle could have been a vintage hallmark used by the original maker, who unfortunately we cannot identify.

Hard to tell on the style of link although it does have a Greco-Roman appearance and very 1940s to 1960s.

    best wishes,

Gold Bangle | Not Solid Gold
    by: Anonymous

Hi thanks for writing in. So that we know which direction to commence research, it helps if you could provide as much info as possible, especially as we have no image, there are hundreds of animal marks. If we're talking US manufacturer, a strange looking animal mark with a pointed horn/head was used by H.H. Curtis MA, USA - ca 1891 - 1915. Without an image can not tell.

If you think it is US made, you might like to try researching under "US Jewelry Marks 1922 edition". The link to what visitors tell me is a very useful resource is in the Jewelry Resources.

How and where did you acquire the bangle? Was it inherited? Auction site in US? Flee market in UK or Australia?

Many Gold Bangles are Hollow and these types of bangles are very easy to damage, just a slight knock can bend and dent them. You can have these hollow gold bangles, "oil filled" or "wax filled" which does make them a little more sturdy however, caveat emptor they are not Solid Gold.

As much info and preferably an image all help in any hallmark determination.

    best wishes,

    Yvonne Hammouda-Eyre

Is the metal marked 950 Silver or Platinum?
    by: Yvonne

    Good Evening Deb

thank you for writing and drawing a picture of your mark! It helps.

first the easy part - 750 is a universal mark on jewelry that indicates the metal on which it is stamped is 18 carat gold. Most often found on jewelry of European origin.

FYI 950 is the Italian mark for Platinum. Platinum is heavier than Silver and Platinum is a grayish-silver colour. If the metal tests for SILVER- the bracelet could be from Mexico as 950 is the designated mark for Silver in Mexico and these pieces usually have a maker's mark from Mexico.

    Mysterious bracelet marked JM?

    (Sweden)

    Hello!
I just bought this bracelet, (for 25 swedish crowns,(2.5 euro) and wonder about age and the mark "JM" in a box, and also a mark that looks like four mountains in front of each other with a moon (sun?) above to the right...Any idea what this means? I love this bracelet, and hope the 4-leaf clover pattern bring me some luck..
    Hoping for answer.

    Mystery solved!?!
    by: Anonymous

I let a swedish jewellery expert, Lars Yngve Johansson take a look at the mysterious bracelet. And he says this: The bracelet is probably from Germany, from around year 1900. It is made of gold plated brass. It's worth 3-400 SEK (30-40 GBP).

I paid 25 SEK (2.5 GBP) at a charity shop. So I guess the mystery is solved now,..!?!

Thankyou everybody who wanted to help me. I love this bracelet and it's so fun to know a little bit more about it.

wish you all a great summer,
    Thankyou

The Sun radiating above 5 mountains is the sign of one country... Guatemala!

I had one of these once. Unusual. Gold filled, as it's called, if I remember right, meaning low gold content, but nice looking. JM, I don't know.

The bracelet copies a native style there.

    Researching British Hallmarks
    by: Anonymous

    Hi Dian

originally UK maker's marks were pictograms, but by the early 1600s it became a common practice to use the maker's initials. The problem is that there isn't enough information or a photograph of the mark on your Bracelet to go by.

There are a number of registered marks with the letters JP. The shape of the cartouche that the intials appears within are crucial, so is the style of the letter and the shape of the cartouche the date letter appears within. The date letter, in this case the letter "Z" tells you the year the maker's mark was registered but we need to see it.

There is a link to a page where you can research British Hallmarks in the Jewelry Resources.

    14 Kt means...
    by: Anonymous

Marked 14 Kt, means it is 14 of 24 parts GOLD. Karat markings are not on silver or Platinum. It is white gold.
Since nickel is not close to the density of gold, 14 parts gold and 10 parts nickel (and that's not exactly right, as there are other elements involved) basically means that by numbers of atoms, the color of the nickel wins over the gold. There is more gold by weight, but not on a molecular level.

I've been an estate jeweler for 27 years.

"Silver" Italian Bracelet Marked 14 K
    by: Anonymous

Hi thanks for writing it! 'Italy 14kt' means the bracelet is made in Italy from 14k gold. Gold in its purest form, is 24k and too soft to made jewelry so other metals are added to the pure gold, such as silver, nickel, zinc and copper to make it harder and more suitable for jewelry. If the metal is marked 14k and is white or "silver" colored, then it means that the metal is white gold and not yellow gold.

As 18k is the minimum standard for sale in Italy, this bracelet was probably made for the overseas market. Maybe for the tourist market.

    Thanks again for writing in.

    IMAGES:
If you would like us to research further, two more images of the bracelet will be necessary. One image should be as close-up to the mark on the clasp as possible. Another image should be of the entire bracelet including the cameo.

    Bangle with Sapphire
    by: Yvonne

    Good Morning!

    Marie
can you tell us more about the bangle? The information is not enough to go by...
Marie, can you tell if it's a vintage bangle, mid to late 20th century, brand new, or is it an antique bangle? I'm guessing, it being 14KT gold, it's made in the US?

What color are the sapphires; sapphires come in an array of colors, I'm guessing... again - they are blue, are they dark blue opaque colored sapphires or finer quality? Do you know if they are natural sapphires or synthetics? Is the bangle white gold or yellow gold? I prefer white gold with blue sapphires myself.

    Warm Regards

    Antique Gold Marks on Bracelet
    by: Amanda

If you could look for stamp marks on the bracelet - they are often located on the claps or required to be on pieces that will not easily come undone and lost.

The 1910 is a good indicator of the year of creation, but could (unlikely) be a copyright year. If it is in fact 90+ yrs old, it may be gold but not marked with a purity marking. Though you will usually find one. Take a magnifying glass or Loupe and look very closely. Please update us with your findings. :)

Gold and Ruby Bracelet, Ring and Earring

    by Kelly
    (Leesburg, GA)

I found these items in a bulk purchase of vintage jewelry about 6 months ago. The marking on the bracelet is G 900, and some sort of hallmark but I can't make it out. The Earring is also marked G900 but the ring is marked 585. I know the 585 is 14k gold but not sure about the 900 mark. I've read it could be silver, gold or platinum! I assume the G may mean Gold but does that mean it is solid gold? Please advise how to tell what it really is. I appreciate everyone's comments. Thanks.

Also, if someone knows the value please let me know.

Can you help me learn more about a bracelet my father gave me the day before he passed away?

    Hallmark on top

I hope you can help me. The day before my father passed away he handed me a bracelet. I took it to Kay Jewelers and they unofficially appraised it at around $3500-$4000. What interested me more is the hallmark on it.

The bracelet was made very well, which I will enclose pictures. We have no information on it. It has marks of what appears to be a lion with a wreath around its shoulder area, holding a torch in the air. It is stamped 10K CAL. There is a mark on the clasp inside and also a raised mark on the other side. I like it because it's different. I would feel better knowing more about this piece before making a decision on what I should do with it.

My dad thought it was a gawdy piece and kind of laughed when handing it to me saying "maybe you can sell it". I am not sure if I will do that. It is too showy for me with all the diamonds. The clasp is broken. It looks bent and with proper tools it can be unbent and the pin would fit right back where it was. I really hope you can help me.

    Sincerely, Karen Jenner

    Hi Karen

It's mutual, I'm in agreement here. Karen, your Bracelet is indeed a unique bracelet, quite ornate, and looks to be exceptionally well-made, as you mention. This Bracelet also appears to have good weight to it. A simple job, I imagine, for a reputable jeweler, to straighten the crooked attachment on the bracelet clasp, which will increase the value once repaired.

We are going to need more images of the actual mark. It's hard to see it in this photo, even when I zoom in and look from different angles. One image, as close-up as possible. Send the images to:

    14k bracelet vase mark

I have an antique heavy gold bracelet of 14 k rose gold and blue stone bracelet that weighs 34 pennyweights. It has a pomegranates design in the stones and the metal links of the bracelet. The hallmarks are 1)a CM 585 in irregularly shaped lozenze and 2)a pitcher/vase in a rectangular border with an 'n' or perhaps a cyrillic letter 'p' (pokoji) (hard to be sure which) on the left side of the vase foot and a number 2 on the right side of the vase foot. I can perhaps have some pictures made if it will help. Thanks

That is an odd looking mark. Tiffany & Co used a mark *similar* to this on items exhibited during the Exposition Universelle in Paris France ca 1900

Do you have any idea of the age? More background information and photos of the bracelet and close-up of the mark itself would help.

Emerald gemstone| Color, Cut, Clarity & Crystal
    by: Emerald Lover

love'em, love emeralds although I haven't clue about the feather-in-your-cap mark, I do know that green emeralds are rare gems. The color of the emeralds are the most important consideration. Worldwide, Coumbia produces the most emeralds , they come from the Muzo, Coscuez and Chivor mines.

Unlike diamond where the loupe standard i.e. 10X magnification is used emerald is graded by eye. If emerald has no visible inclusions to the eye (assuming you have normal vision) it is considered flawless. Because emeralds are rare and valuable synthetic emeralds are produced. Good luck with that mark.

    Tiffany Cuff
    by: Anonymous

    Hi There,

Without seeing photo's of your item it will be difficult to determine if your bracelet is an authentic Tiffany & Co. piece or if it is a reproduction/fake. Tiffany & Co. will always clearly mark their jewelry, they use several "stamps" (markings on the clasp or inside that indicate it was made by Tiffany) They used quite a wide range of markings throughout the years, though the common markings can be found listed online. I hope this helps.

MEA Mark on a gold bracelet

    by Daniel Carter
    (USA)

I have a gold bracelet that have the letters (JZUIZKIGE).
The two Z's in the letters could also be a 2 and the U a V. These marks are very small. Directly under the letters is what I believe to be a hallmark: (MEA) with a curved arrow starting at the M and ending at the A. The pointed end of the arrow is on the A. Could someone please help me figure out the maker of this bracelet? Thanks!!

    Bracelet - Gold Hallmark
    by: Anonymous

I have taken it to a free appraisal at one of the larger auction houses in NYC. The expert loved, called it machine age circa 1930's. In England almost twenty years ago a jeweler (200 year old company) said it was Austrian, I am at a loss, to find out the makers mark. I have had success in the past finding hallmarks or makers marks by looking at thousands of pictures in reference libraries until that "AH HA!" moment when a faint impression on a piece of jewelry matches a picture. Unfortunately I haven't been able to identify this mark yet.

Antique Silver, Coin Silver & Value of Silver
    by: Anonymous

Hi Kirsten - thanks for writing in. I'm leaning towards silver because of the letters - SIL

Silver is lighter than gold, and dents quite easily, especially being a bracelet which is more prone to knocks.. Many of the antique silver bracelets are not solid silver but "filled" some in fact were filled with wax. The composite material also added weight or "heft".

The "X" could mean a number of things, it could mean it's plated or it could be a duty mark. Not sure. You would need to take it to your local jeweler to test the metal content. I have just posted a eye-popping video on the Antique Jewelry Investor Blog about the Value of old Coin Silver which is .900 purity. Although this item is not silver coinage ;-) it just gives you the general idea about buying and selling old silver.

    warm regards

    Portugal Hallmrking System
    by: Yvonne

    Hi Priscilla

    the number 9 on your antique Bracelet from Portugal could be the gold standard, meaning 9 carat gold;

the modernization of Portugal's hallmarking system began in 1887 with the utilization of a series of consistent hallmark core images.

It is the identification of these core images that yields the most important information about the hallmark. Coupled with the mark's shape outline, this exceptional method of hallmarking, still in use today, qualities Portugal's hallmark as being inclusive in design.

So its the frames-shape outlines and core images, both important in understanding Portugal's hallmarking methodology.

A photo of the mark would be very helpful and If you require an on-line appraisal at some time, essential.

The mark with the animal head and the number 4 looks to be a mark I found in a book titled "World Hallmarks" page 129. The mark is a mark for Hungry for small gold articles made between 1937 - 1966

The B is the Assay Office mark for Budapest which was used until 1966

The other mark is most likely the makers mark. I have not yet found that.

    Hindu-Saudi markings-Bracelet?

    by Wm Carlton
    (Amherst Massachusetts, U.S.)

I Have a bracelet that I bought from a friend, his family emigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines a couple generations ago. He states that his family invested in a lot of "Saudi gold". This bracelet has no recognizable numerals (to me) but tests at between 14k and 18k gold using acid scratch test. However I would like some more information on the hallmarks that appear at each end, I suspect they are a form of Hindu-Arabic, I don't even know which way is up on these hallmarks. I had to attach a small microscope to my cell phone to get these images. Can anyone help me decipher these marks? Thanks in advance.

Arabic Translation Service and Expert Judgement
    by: Yvonne

    Hi William

the last in the series reads 21 k - the numbers are in Arabic and the k letter is a k letter the same as English.

The centre mark with the dot is the Arabic letter G and could stand for grams.

To the left of this is another series of numbers, the first in the series is not clear, can't see it the next two are 7 9 in Arabic. No city or country mark.

It's a bit of a mix really. It could have been stamped in India for a Middle-east market. I have seen quite a few of this style flat curb link chain in the jewelry shops that serve the tourist industry that line the streets of Cairo.

I have a unique hallmark. IT reminds me of Silpada! IT is NOT! It is an upside down triangle in a combination of V's that are stacked correctly, the way a V should face, Up..

what is the carat of this gold bracelet?

    by Rosalie
    (Vancouver, Canada)

Bought a bracelet from a thrift store. they said they acid tested it and it was 14 k. When I got home, I looked under a jeweler's loop and there was an inscription "1/5 th 9 metal". The inscription was on the edge of the bangle and may have been incomplete. It is one of those antique looking bracelets

1/5 of your bracelet is 9k gold
    by: Anonymous

    Hi there,
Excellent question. Most certainly I would take the bracelet in and have it checked by your local jeweler. He/She should do an acid test for free with a high end electronic tester.

From what I understand, the markings on your bracelet mean "1/5 9k gold filled" base metal. Normally the mark would be "1/5 9k shell" and not "metal".

    Trust you kept your receipt!

Wishes of a wonderful day. :)
