Haskell Unsigned Clip Information
by: Yvonne

Good Morning Elizabeth

a very pretty pin- Miriam Haskell used every colour, shape, size bead and every possible material imaginable. It's hard to even fathom the extent of her inventory, for example, beads, in the millions were purchased from all of the world.

Haskell never used Cultured Pearls; all pearls in Haskell pieces are imitation. Baroque pearls were created in a variety of shapes and colours including a translucent bronze tone called "gunmetal". Coloured pearls are less common than those made with white pearls.

Between 1926 and the mid-1940s, Haskell produced a wide variety of unsigned dress clips, fur clips and pins. Looking at the back of these pieces is required to identify a genuine Haskell.

Pins and clips made during the 1930s (and earlier) have finished backs with a SOLID METAL PLATE covering the wiring. The round or oval plates are held in place by small metal tabs. Some plates are flat and some have slightly convex shape, others have a distinct "ridge" that emphasises this convex shape.

The metal back will be gold or silver coloured and most pin backs by Haskell are SMOOTH - only on rare occasions have hammered metal backs been found. As the reverse of this pin is not in focus, it is hard to tell if the hammered metal back surface is consistent with the hammered metal backs of Haskell that are rare and found on unsigned pins and clips.

I hope this information helps. More information on Miriam Haskell and an appraisal form can be found Here...

Kind Regards
Yvonne

Miriam Haskell Repair
by: Amy

Hello,

Fantastic Web Site! I have what I believe to be a Miriam Haskell Unsigned Necklace that is Literally a work of art. I would love to submit a photograph of this necklace in hopes that someone may have a solution for a repair. The necklace has all the hallmarks of Miriam Haskell, but honestly even if was not a Haskell, I would keep it regardless, if I can find one replacement bead.

Once you see the piece, I think you would understand why. Articulate geometric design is an understatement, but all I can think of to describe it. There are incredible florets, with each flower composed of pale pinks, peaches with gray & black Lucite accent beads with facets. Diamond (fake I believe) rhinestones reflect the perfect amount of sparkle.

Is there anywhere I can send the necklace for repair? One pear shaped pale pink Lucite bead is missing, with facets? Truly this necklace is incredible and very busy, so it's actually difficult to see the missing bead. I would at least like to try to have it restored to it's original condition, but I know how hard Haskell is to repair. It's simply too elaborate to give up on. Any information would be appreciated. I can send pictures of the necklace, I think once you see it, you will understand my dilemma.

Miriam Haskell Necklace/Earring Set

Metal & Glass Bead Necklace & Earrings

Metal & Glass Bead Necklace & Earrings

Greetings!

I'm wondering what date this might be from and what a general appraisal value might be. It's signed on the
back of the earrings, on the screw-in clips. On the
necklace, it's signed on the back of the clasp, and on
the back of the pendant. I really love the way the delicate little maple leaves entwine around the glass beads. Is the metal part Russian gold?

Thanks very much for your help,

Ken

by: jenny

I have contacted what's it worth and have had a reply my bracelet dates from the late 50s to early 60s, and a similar bracelet and necklace set was made in 1962 by The Coro jewellery company and they have given me a current fair market value of $2.000.00, but because it is not signed they have no information on the designer. Can you give me any advice on selling my bracelet and finding out more about the designer.

More Information Requested
by: Yvonne

Hi Jenny
no never would we forget you! We have just been extremely busy and with Lorraine off sick...

Now, basically, we don't have enough information to make any kind of determination. Even the photos (I know how much you have tried) are not clear. I will be adding a page on photography for beginners when I get a chance. Hopefully by the end of this month.

Are there any markings at all on the bracelet? Use a magnifying glass if you do not have a jewelers loupe. Any numbers, or letters or pictures?

What metal is the bracelet made from? Is it gold plated? Solid gold? Pot metal?

What kind of clasp is it? Clasps can often provide important clues about the date.

What about the weight or heft? Heft is always an important clue.
Always be conscious of the weight of the jewelry the minute you pick it up.

Are there stones in the bracelet? What are they? Gemstones? Rhinestones? (originally rock crystal found along the banks of the Rhine river but today a misnomer for colorless glass in costume jewelry).

Hi Jenny the photo was received but unfortunately it's not a very clear photo of the bracelet. I manually moved the best photo into your first submission.

If the jewelry is not signed, it was made between 1926 and 1947. Between those years Miriam Haskell did not sign her work. Are you sure it's Miriam Haskell?

Miriam Haskell Valuations
by: Anonymous

Hi Terry

what a fantastic piece of jewelry! Miriam Haskell jewelry is expensive due to the quality of the craftsmanship and unique & distinctive designs. Haskell attention to elaborate detail is one of the hallmarks of Miriam Haskell and value was also directly related to the amount of time it took to complete a piece.

Judging from the image, the necklace appears to be in good condition. Condition is important because the value of Haskell pieces goes down dramatically if there is any damage to the piece, this is because the elements are so difficult to replace, so if you find an inexpensive Haskell piece check it carefully for damage. If it seems to good to be true it could be damaged.

Terry, Miriam Hakell necklaces in particular are the most sought after due to the elaborate designs, and the likelihood of finding one at a low price is slim, unless it's damaged ;-)

Until the mid to late 1940s Miriam Haskell pieces went unsigned, so this is why there is so much confusion about what is Haskell and what isn't Haskell. You mention the piece is signed which will add to the value, and while there is no doubt that many authentic Haskell jewels unsigned are out there on the market, it is unlikely that all that are attributed to Haskell are genuine. A good way to identify these unsigned pieces is through vintage ads.

You could have the piece valued on-line by a Miriam Haskell expert. More Details can be found here...

Preserving Miriam Haskell Jewelry
by: Anonymous

I commend you for wanting to take care of your precious Miriam Haskell vintage jewels and preserve them for the next generation to love and enjoy. We can't bring back Miriam Haskell or Frank Hess (originally a window dressor from Macy's) or any of the other talented designers, but we can preserve these jewels in honor of their memory.

Missing beads will be a problem. Missing beads will also dramtically reduce the value of the necklace. Beads in the millions were purchsed from all over the world, for Miriam Haskell Jewellery, from France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Germany and other localities. When the perfect bead could not be found, they were specially made by master glassmakers in Europe. Haskell did not only use glass beads in her creations, but wood, shell, ivory, bone, Bakelite, plastics, cloisonné and other materials were used.

A sample of each bead was numbered, and filed in an envelope with the cost, manufacturer, and date of purchase noted. Miriam Haskell obtained a business permit for a gift shop in The McAlpin Hotel, 103 Sixteenth Street, New York City in 1926, so trying to find the exact matching bead that's the same as the missing beads on your necklaces maybe next to impossible as they might not even make them anymore ( there were millions of different beads used in her Jewellery). And then you have to attach it to the piece, which is another problem in itself.

You might like to contact Miriam Haskell customer service and ask if it's possible to replace the missing beads. Im not sure if they repair vintage pieces or not. Let us know if you find out.

customerserviceAThaskelljewelsDOTcom

Another idea is list your Miriam Haskell pieces and attach close-up photos of the beads and findings in the Jewelry Exchange on Antique Jewelry Investor. It is a free service. Another collector may be interested in purchasing "as is" or may have a similiar piece they might be willing to sell or trade that has matching beads to your one.

Good Luck!

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have two vintage Miriam Haskell pieces that are of the same style beads in turquoise and salmon colors and baroque pearls? however one is a choker and the other much longer.

Would you please provide any information you have. The longer one my mother identified by #6817047. Also the choker has the MH signature at the clasp but the longer piece is unmarked and has no clasp - and then there are the gold and/or brass filigree bead separators each shares.

Thank you so much for your help. Should you need additional information please do not hesitate in asking. (As I would love to find out as much as possible about these lovely pieces.)

For anyone interested in collecting costume jewelry, in particular, Miriam Haskell costume jewelry, the jewelry book, The Jewels of Miriam Haskell by D. F., Cera, belongs on your bookshelf.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this beautiful book dedicated to the jewels of Miriam Haskell! It took a great deal of research on the author Cera's part to verify pieces of costume jewelry as authentic jewelry by Haskell because Haskell never registered her designs although she began signing her pieces in 1950. Miriam Haskell's trademark was not received until 1988, 64 years after Haskell began designing!

The author had to rely on advertisements, photographs of famous movie stars shown wearing Haskell jewelry, newspapers and magazines, etc. It takes a lot of detective work to identify Miriam Haskell Costume Jewelry and this book is a fantastic tool to help you do just that.

happy costume jewelry collecting!

So far we have identified 2 peices. One necklace is yellow with large beads that look crackled. The clasp is signed and has a flower decoration on it. The other is a milky blue pearl beads with crystal and small beads between each bead. This clasp is also marked and has flower on it.

Both pieces need to be cleaned.

Good Morning Cindy

Oh My America! Your ship certainly did come in. Miriam Haskell is an iconic designer whose early flamboyant pieces, made in the likes of men, such as designer Frank Hess, are among some of the most widely collected of U.S made costume jewellery pieces. That the pearls feel a "little dirty" isn't unusual because the pearls sit on the skin and body oils and acids do erode the metal and can taint the pearls. The Pearls, as you know, are not Natural Pearls.

Cindy, when it comes to Miriam Haskell Jewelry, the pearls and large cluster pieces have the most value. If you would like an Appraisal by a Miriam Haskell Expert, the Appraisal Form can be found HERE

Hi Sandra

MIRIAM HASKELL OPENED HER FIRST BOUTIQUE IN 1926, "LE BIJOU DE L'HEURE" IN NEW YORK'S McALPIN HOTEL. She created collections for the society women of her day, the lavish productions of Flo Ziegfeld, as well as the couture of Coco Chanel.

Joan Crawford, Lucille Ball, the Duchess of Windsor, were among her greatest patrons. It wasn't long before her spectacular, custom-made jewels were sought after, collected and cherished.

To locate a jeweler experienced in repairing Antique jewelry and designer costume jewelry, one of the simplest ways is through the business yellow pages in your area. Being in Queensland, Brisbane Australia might be a good place to start.

You might also like to consider having the piece appraised by a Miriam Haskell expert.

I've just started collecting Miriam Haskell too. Not what you would expect from Haskell. Are the beads real Jade or jade colored? Forgive my ignorance, as i am still a newbie, but wouldn't it be signed then, being 48 years old, it would make it Haskell - 1960s. Miriam Haskell didn't sign her work until 1947 after which time, according to my Vintage Costume Jewelry book, her work was stamped with her name on a horseshoe cartouche, an oval stamp, and on the hook of or clasp. Are you planning on selling? Karin

Miriam Haskell gold chain necklace?

by Lori
(Virginia, U.S.)

I have an 18 inch Miriam Haskell gold chain necklace in perfect condition.
The pics I've attached don't show the true color, and make the color look varied. The necklace is really beautiful in person....
It has her name tag AND on the clasp her name is on one side & "PATENT 3427691" on the other side....
Can you possibly tell me the value of my piece & other pertinent info that may be of help to me?
Thank you!

Bead Materials Miriam Haskell
by: Amanda

Hi there,
I was wondering, did Miriam Haskell ever use beads made from Ivory, Shell, Bone etc? Also I was wondering if she used Rose quartz much? I have a couple of necklaces that are old but unmarked. They don't appear as elaborate as other Haskell jewellery I've seen but I feel they may have been inspired by her work. I also have a textile wrist cuff, well covered with Ivory, bone, and what may be tortoise shell beads. Does this sound familiar to you?
Great site, by the way. Many thanks.

Kindest regards,
Amanda

I have a Miriam Haskell chain necklace with jade beads. It is the same chain as yours and has the tags attached. I think yours is a real Miriam Haskell

It Looks Like a Fake
by: Anonymous

Lori

the chain looks pretty average to me and it looks as if someone has attached a Miriam Haskell Clasp and added a hangtag (that's not hanging) to add further support to the impersonation.
Im sorry but not convinced.

Sterling Silver Stamped Filligrees
by: Anonymous

if it is a genuine unsigned Miiram Haskell and not a good example of a "wannabe" - the filligree backing metal should be made of sterling silver as sterling silver was used for the Russian silver colours (dark antique) on these beautiful stamped filligree backings that replaced the solid metal backings in 1945, after which time, sterling silver metal became readily available again.

Genuine unsigned Haskell filligrees are usually lighter in weight and with sharp edges compared with Haskell's expensive, heavier components.

Yvonne

yes it has filigree like a wreath then it's open. It does look like antiqued silver and looks brushed.

Is the backing stamped Filgree?
by: Yvonne

Good Evening,

when it comes to identifying Miriam Haskell the backing of the broach should be of interest. Haskell did occasionally use filligrees in unsigned jewelry but they are rare. An unsigned piece of jewelry featuring and claiming to be Haskell's is more likely from post war Japan or Germany.

Can you tell if it is a stamped filigree material? Also more information about the colour of the material will help. Is it a Russian silver colour? i.e dark antique color?

Warm Regards
Yvonne

Miriam Haskell set and can't find anything like it to figure its worth.

by Buddy Probst

Well the best we can tell its glass beads-5 strands - clasp ear rings - has the oval mark on neckless clasp and the name stamped in the clasps on the ear rings. The pendents look and feel the same as the regular beads.

Is it a Horsehoe plaque on French Ear Clips?
by: Anonymous

Good afteroon
We would need to see the signature on the encklace clasp and the signed earrings to provide any further comments.

Hints to remember:
Three examples (there are more) of Haskell forgeries include:
1. the addition of a Haskell hangtag, slide clasp, hook, or box clasp on non-Haskell pieces.
2. Glued on signature
3. the complete new construction of a puece with Haskell marks.

Warm Regards
Yvonne

Signed Miriam Haskell Necklace and matching bracelet.

by Megan
(Minneapolis, MN)

I have a signed single strand baroque and gilt necklace and bracelet. The necklace has it's original slide clasp and the bracelet has the original slide clasp and an extension "cord" with a lobster clasp. It is definitely one of her more modest pieces. I am wondering if this is in excellent condition, how much is this worth.
